Exclusive: Gianluigi Buffon recently rejected new transfer offers before deciding to retire, says expert

Former Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is set to retire from professional football cover but recently rejected the chance to play in the Saudi Pro League.

The 45-year-old is sure to go down in history as one of the greatest ever goalkeepers, having enjoyed a remarkable career for club and country, winning ten Serie A titles with Juve, Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain, and, most memorably, the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Buffon is now retiring, and added in his exclusive CaughtOffside column that the veteran shot-stopper recently rejected offers from Saudi clubs in order to hang up his gloves instead.

Buffon most recently played for Parma in Serie B, and one imagines he might have had a year or two left in him in Saudi Arabia or another less competitive league, but he’s had a long and successful career and has truly earned the chance to finally call it a day.

Crystal Palace could be on the verge of bagging themselves a bargain if reports surrounding Parma’s Yann Karamoh are accurate.

The player has already been described as the ‘new Mbappe,’ and the 23-year-old has been previously linked with the Eagles according to Sport Parma and cited by HITC.

It’s been suggested that both Palace and Lille have enquired about the player’s availability, and with him recently having been left out of Parma’s plans and had his No.10 shirt taken from him, that would suggest he is surplus to requirements for the Italian outfit.

As someone that plays predominantly on the right side, he can fill give Patrick Vieira another decent attacking option.

Though he’s yet to really set Italian football alight, he has plenty of time to grow, and with Sport Parma via HITC saying he’s likely to be available for as little as £5m, that’s a deal that Palace can’t afford to turn their noses up at.

If Gianluigi Buffon thought his homecoming to Parma would be a glorious occasion, the club’s ultras have quickly put paid to that notion.

Buffon burst onto the Serie A scene with the club as a 17-year-old, however, he soon left for the relative riches of Juventus, where he’s enjoyed a storied and trophy-laden career.

A one-season stint at Paris Saint-Germain notwithstanding, Buffon is now back at the club that he first played for 26 years ago, and joins as a 43-year-old veteran.

It’s a real good news story, however, the ultras have taken none to kindly to the news, unfurling a huge banner outside the ground.

The tone and inference is clear, and will surely have put a dampener on the homecoming.

One can only speculate that if Buffon fails to do the business each week between the sticks, how he may be received by Parma’s most hardcore supporters.

It’s generally accepted that players should show the referee total respect, but if you ever hear the audio from a game then you’ll know that that they’ll all happily swear at each other.

It means that you really need to go the extra mile to get a yellow card for dissent, so you have to wonder what Zlatan said here:

Refs will often show a red if their impartiality is questioned or perhaps if something particularly vile is said about a family member, but Zlatan does a fine job of playing innocent here.

Hopefully a transcript does come out from this, as it would be fascinating to know what was said.

Ex-Roma and Inter star Luigi Sartor arrested after growing 106 Marijuana plants with Juventus graduate responsible for cultivating drug

According to Goal via Gazzetta di Parma, former Juventus, Roma and Inter star Luigi Sartor has been arrested after being found to grow 106 plants of Marijuana in an abandoned farmhouse in Parma.

It’s reported that 46-year-old Sartor, who also represented Vicenza, Parma, Verona and the Italian national team, is now under house arrest.

Goal report that the former full-back was responsible for the growing of the Marijuana, with estimations deeming that the plants found could’ve yielded around two kilograms of drug.

It’s added that investigators had been keeping a close eye on the activity at the property for some time, especially as the doubling of the power to the electrical meter was requested.

The report details that the internal lighting used to cultivate the crop could also be seen from outside, as well as the smell of Marijuana being detected.

It’s stated that agents unearthed their latest clue around 10 days ago, when a routine stop of Sartor whilst driving alluded to the smell of Marijuana from inside the car.

Ansa report that the ex-Italy international reserved his right not to answer when questioned before judge Beatrice Purita.

It’s added that Sartor has faced other criminal proceedings in the past, with the ace found to be involved in the 2011 Italian football match-fixing scandal.

Carlo Ancelotti had tears in his eyes during the minute’s applause that Everton and Leeds United held in tribute to Diego Maradona before this evening’s Premier League tie.

Ancelotti was understandably emotional during the tribute, the 61-year-old faced off against Maradona many times during their time together in Serie A.

The current Everton boss delivered a wonderful tribute to the Argentine all-time great during his pre-match press conference as well, when he said “he was my opponent, he became my friend.”

Ancelotti also managed Napoli for 18 months, the club where Maradona cemented his European legend after tearing it up on the international stage and in the Argentinean top-flight.

Ancelotti is just 18 months older than Maradona, who sadly passed on Wednesday. Our thoughts are with Carlo at this time, he’s one of football’s classiest individuals.

Video: Real Madrid loanee Borja Mayoral shows his class for Roma with a brilliantly composed finish vs Parma

Real Madrid’s current injury crisis does make you wonder if they should’ve kept hold of Borja Mayoral, but it’s likely he would be stuck in Mariano Diaz’s role as a last resort.

Mayoral is playing and scoring regularly for Roma in the Europa League since moving in the summer, but he’s struggled to make much of an impact in Serie A.

That changed today when he opened the scoring against Parma, and it’s just a brilliantly composed finish from a tight angle:

Usually a striker will lash at that and go for power, but he just calmly picks his spot and the keeper isn’t getting anywhere near it.

Roma’s website confirmed they do have a purchase option on him but Real Madrid also extended his contract before loaning him out so they may still have plans for him if he blossoms.

In the 54th minute of AC Milan’s Serie A clash with Parma, Franck Kessie equalised for the San Siro outfit in amazing style with a thunderous effort.

The central midfielder drifted in from the left flank and was allowed the freedom to continue skipping forward by several Parma players.

Kessie soon punished this defending by firing the ball into the top corner with an absolute rocket from around 30 yards out, the goalkeeper was literally rooted to his spot as the ball flew into the net.
