It’s very clear indeed where West Ham’s problems lie this season, even if they began the 2023/24 campaign in reasonable enough fashion.

With 10 games gone in the campaign so far, they’re one of only two teams in the top 11 sides in the Premier League with a negative goal difference.

Why? It’s because they don’t score enough goals.

With 33-year-old striker, Michail Antonio, not getting any younger and Danny Ings being a complete waste of space so far this season, the Hammers front line boast an embarrassing two goals between them, both scored by Antonio, per WhoScored.

If David Moyes doesn’t want to be spending the second half of the season battling against a slide down the table, then acquiring a striker in the January transfer window is a must.

It beggars belief why the club didn’t prioritise one in the summer window but there’s no use worrying about that now.

According to Calciomercato, West Ham are one of a clutch of teams that are ‘vigilant and determined to obtain new information’ on Roma’s England striker, Tammy Abraham.

Though injured at present, he would surely represent an affordable incoming transfer in Janaury and is unlikely to do any worse than his contemporaries, Ings and Antonio.

The Irons need to be right on it in terms of a striker hunt so that as soon as the window opens, they can hit their ground running with their new purchase.

There doesn’t seem to be a transfer window that goes by now without Chelsea being heavily involved in one way or another.

The Blues have been the busiest club in the marketplace by a distance since Todd Boehly took over, and there’s nothing to suggest that things won’t be much the same in January and next summer.

One player that could be of interest to them is their former striker, Tammy Abraham.

Currently out injured, the forward could be open to a move back to the Premier League according to TeamTalk, and Chelsea have an ace up their sleeve should they decide to bring the player back to Stamford Bridge.

The report also states that Aston Villa and Brentford could be interested – the former incase Ollie Watkins decides to move on – which appears unlikely given that he’s just signed a contract extension until 2028 – and the latter because Ivan Toney is expected to leave.

Where Chelsea are one step ahead is that their player, Romelu Lukaku, is currently ripping it up in Serie A, and there’s a possibility of a swap deal with the Belgian.

Though the truth behind Lukaku’s fall-out at the Blues hasn’t become public, it does appear that he has no future in west London, so a swap with Tammy Abraham could be a move to suit all parties.

The managerial merry-go-round could soon take another twist with both West Ham’s David Moyes and Roma’s Jose Mourinho out of contract at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

It’s believed that the Hammers board and the Scot aren’t necessarily interested in beginning potential contract extension talks at present, and may well leave them until nearer to the end of the season.

That would allow both manager and club to assess the relative merits of the season overall, and then make a decision on whether it’s time for a change or not.

Claret and Hugh cite reports which suggest that the Hammers, who were linked with the Special One back in March by LaRoma24, are actually plotting an approach for him, which would in effect make sense as to why they’re not talking to Moyes.

However, transfer guru and CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, doesn’t believe that there is anything concrete in the current rumours.

‘Despite previous West Ham interest, Mourinho is not in contact with any other club than Roma since he rejected a huge proposal from Saudi in June,’ he wrote in his exclusive Daily Briefing.

‘At the moment the situation has not changed. Also, West Ham keep backing Moyes so we will see what happens in 2024.’

It would seem therefore that West Ham are going to continue to bide their time and see how things play out over the next few weeks and months.

If the east Londoners can get into the final stages of European competition again as well as finishing in the European places in readiness for next season, the Irons are likely to get push back from their supporters if they want to dump Moyes for a newer model.

At the end of the current season, the ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho is expected to call time on his stint at Italian giants Roma.

The Portuguese’s contract is up at the end of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign, and he’s unlikely to renew, particularly as he’s finding it more difficult this season to get a tune out of his Giallorossi players.

Indeed, TeamTalk suggest he will definitely leave the club next summer.

At present, the club find themselves in seventh position in the Italian top-flight, already a whopping eight points behind leaders, Inter Milan.

A new challenge clearly awaits with a move back to the Premier League a distinct possibility.

Back in March, LaRoma24 detailed a remarkable offer that West Ham apparently made to Mourinho, who was left flattered by the approach but turned it down because his focus remained on Roma.

Now that situation has clearly changed, and with the Hammers actively looking for a replacement for Moyes according to Football Insider, it could be an opportune moment for Mourinho to continue his love affair with the English top-flight and in a city he knows well.

Certainly, if West Ham want to continue on an upward trajectory and not allow their Europa Conference League title win to become another ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, then a move for the Special One makes perfect sense.

Funds will clearly need to be invested into the team in order for Mourinho to be assuaged by the project, but as the club showed in the past transfer window, money will be made available for the right players.

There are at least two big names heading for the Roma exit.

That’s according to a recent report from TeamTALK, who claims manager Jose Mourinho is poised to leave the Italian club at the end of the season with striker Tammy Abraham likely to follow.

Mourinho’s contract with the club is set to expire at the end of the current campaign and it now seems very unlikely he’ll be offered an extension.

The same fate is thought to await Abraham too. The 26-year-old, who joined from Chelsea in 2021, does have longer left on his contract but with interest beginning to mount from clubs in the Premier League, it seems next summer could be the right time for the Englishman to make a return.

Aston Villa and Brentford are being linked with a summer approach with the latter likely to be on the lookout for a replacement for Ivan Toney, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, is set to depart the Bees amid strong interest from all of the top London clubs.

During his two years in Rome, Abraham, who has 11 senior international caps to his name, has directly contributed to 48 goals in 107 games in all competitions.

Jose Mourinho was back to his old tricks on Sunday as he was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for mocking Monza’s bench following a late Roma winner.

Stephan El Shaarawy won the game for Mourinho’s men with a last-minute winner, which prompted Mourinho to turn to the opposition bench and taunt them with gestures that they were talking too much and crying too much.

The Roma boss was swiftly shown a straight red card by the referee and he will now miss their next match against Inter Milan.

“You talk a lot and then you cry,” Mourinho is said to have told Monza manager Raffaele Palladino, according to Roma Press.

This is classic Jose behaviour and the football world hopes he never changes.

Currently the team to beat in La Liga, Real Madrid are already looking ahead to next season and the opportunity to recruit a massive name from their recent past.

Los Blancos aren’t necessarily known for looking backwards, as their recruitment policy over the years has shown, however, it does appear that they may make a concession on this occasion.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Jose Mourinho is being lined up as a potential replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who is expected to take the Brazil national team job.

Back in 2013, it was Ancelotti who took over the reins at the Santiago Bernabeu from the Special One, so a role reversal could be on the cards.

Xabi Alonso’s name is also mentioned by the outlet, and whilst he has been honing his managerial skills and acumen at Bayer Leverkusen, there may be a school of thought that the Real job is just too big for him at this stage of his career.

At present, no decision has been made one way or the other, though it’s believed that the strength of public opinion is swaying the Real hierarchy towards Mourinho.

His contract with Roma ends in the summer so there will be no compensation package payable by the Spanish giants, which is another plus point in Mourinho’s favour.

Eric Dier could leave Tottenham in the January transfer window, with no talks currently taking place over a new deal for the player who will be out of contract at the end of this season, according to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing.

Dier has been a key player for Spurs down the years, but he’s less of a regular now and Romano believes it could make sense for him to now leave the club as he’s surely good enough to play regularly elsewhere.

Still, Romano is not aware of anything concrete happening with Roma, despite some recent speculation about former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho looking for a reunion with his former player.

Discussing potential Tottenham departures in January, Romano named Dier as someone whose future was in doubt, along with fellow midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

“Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is another player to watch ahead of January as he recently changed agents. Manchester United had him on their list in the summer, but their priority option was always Sofyan Amrabat,” Romano said.

Hojbjerg was also on the list at other clubs, including Atletico Madrid, who tried very strongly to convince Tottenham, but there was no agreement. Still, Hojbjerg remains keen on a move, so let’s see what happens this January.

One complication to keep in mind is that it’s AFCON this year, so Tottenham might not be too keen to let Hojbjerg go when they can expect to be without Yves Bissouma. This makes the green light a bit more complicated, but Hojbjerg himself is open to a move, whether it’s January or next summer.

Also at Tottenham, Eric Dier is approaching the end of his contract and at the moment there are no talks over a new deal. A January move is a possibility for Dier, but it will depend on the proposals. Personally, I think the best way for both sides now is to try something new, Dier can certainly be a regular starter elsewhere, though I’m not currently aware of anything concrete with Roma, despite rumours.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier reportedly has an opportunity to leave the club in January, with AS Roma reportedly expressing interest in signing him.

According to TuttoSport (via The Sun), Eric Dier is Jose Mourinho’s top choice as Roma aims to strengthen its defense during the January transfer window.

Jose Mourinho has a strong familiarity with the Tottenham defender, having previously coached him during his time at the Premier League club. Dier was a favorite under Mourinho’s management during his tenure in North London.

Dier is likely seeking consistent playing time as he maintains ambitions of making Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

However, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Dier has been sidelined and has not been part of the manager’s plans.

With his diminished role at Tottenham, Dier will be seeking a transfer in January. For Spurs, completing a deal for him in January could be a strategic move to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen for his current club Roma to seal a transfer move for Eric Dier due to his lack of playing time since Ange Postecoglou took over at Spurs.

The England international has had a fine career at Tottenham under a number of different managers, but it’s fair to say he’s no longer guaranteed a starting spot, so it wouldn’t be too surprising to now see him consider a new challenge.

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, as cited and translated by Sport Witness, Mourinho is keen to bring Dier to Roma and take advantage of his current situation at Tottenham to get a deal done.

Eric Dier of Tottenham

One imagines THFC would let Dier go for the right price, though they may also still feel he has a role to play as a backup player for the rest of the season.

Roma have other English players such as Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling at the Stadio Olimpico, so Dier shouldn’t have too many issues fitting in.
