Exclusive: Stan Collymore on the complete meltdown at Man City if Everton are charged

The news that Everton could be docked 12 points by the Premier League for one instance of financial irregularity could have massive consequences for Man City according to Stan Collymore.

The pundit, who is never short of a strong opinion or two, even suggested the the club will go into complete meltdown at the thought of being bounced to the bottom of the English league football pyramid.

‘The Premier League are quite prevalent at briefing journalists and if they’re throwing a 12 point deduction at Everton, which is a significant sanction against one club, for the 114/115 charges that are facing Man City, they’re effectively saying ‘we’re ready, our lawyers are across all of this now, and as an organisation we will not accept it,” Collymore wrote in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

‘Manchester City’s lawyers have tried to kick things into the long grass for quite a number of years now and these aren’t fresh charges. The Premier League are almost prepping the footballing public as to the severity.’

It’s certainly a strange situation when Man City’s historic and significant charges are still not dealt with but Everton, with just a single charge levied against them, appear to be getting hauled before the authorities in double-quick time.

‘Most people would look at Everton and say they feel a little bit for them. They’ve had a shaky time and they’ve never offended anybody, and they come from a great footballing city,’ Collymore continued.

‘If the Premier League can go straight away bang 12 points that might relegate them for the first time in I think 70 years, they would have no qualms whatsoever in throwing the book at Man City.

‘Even if just a quarter of those charges were proven, there is a situation where Manchester City will not only be bounced out of the Premier League, but thrown towards the bottom of the pyramid.’

Given the immense financial backing that Man City’s owners have, it’s a given that they will be able to call upon the services of the best legal teams in the world.

If the Premier League are going to press ahead as Collymore believes, then having taken their time before making their move is likely to serve the EPL better than if it had already gone all guns blazing to try and ensure City were punished.

‘The stakes are so great now it could mean an absolute meltdown for Man City, to the kind of proportions that Rangers suffered in Scotland when they fell foul of paying players via elaborate schemes,’ Collymore added.

‘The Premier League only have the remit to be able to kick them out of the Premier League of course, but the Football Association and the Football League won’t want them in the top divisions of their competition either. City will go to the very bottom of the pile.’

There’s still no timescale on whether any charges will ultimately be brought, and whether the proposed sanctions will be authorised and actioned.

Until there is complete clarity, both Everton and Man City are likely to be waiting on tenterhooks.

Frank Lampard has received a huge blow to his career as the former Chelsea and Everton boss is out of the running for the vacant Rangers job.

Sky Sports are reporting that the Scottish giants are expected to hold final round interviews next week as they finalise their shortlist for a new manager and that Lampard will not be in the mix despite initial conversations.

For a manager who has ambitions to manage in the Premier League again, this is a huge blow as he is now not being considered for one of the big jobs in the Scottish League.

Where Lampard goes from here is unknown as Rangers could have been a good place to relaunch his career.

Rangers would surely have headed to Limassol in the hope of recording a Europa League win to boost their chances of qualification from the group stage.

However, they were quickly reminded that there are no easy ties on the continent.

Frank Lampard tipped for huge managerial job following sacking

Former Chelsea and Everton manager Frank Lampard has been tipped as someone who’d be interested in becoming the new Rangers manager.

Michael Beale has just been sacked at Ibrox, and some big names have been linked with the vacancy, such as former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch.

Now, however, journalist Luke Edwards has suggested he might know something about Lampard being keen on the role.

“Rangers have that pulling power. Obviously Steven Gerrard went up there. I’m sure Frank Lampard would like it,” Edwards said on a BBC Sport podcast.

“Frank Lampard has a very good agent and is continually linked with jobs despite not exactly excelling at any of them.”

Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is being strongly linked with the Rangers job after the sacking of Michael Beale last night.

The American tactician left his role at Leeds last season and has long been highly regarded in the game, even if things didn’t work out for him at Elland Road.

Marsch is now seemingly the leading candidate to take over at Rangers, where he will do battle with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, formerly of Leicester City, another club relegated from the Premier League last season.

Rangers goalscoring legend, Jim Forrest, dies aged 79

For anyone connected to Rangers Football Club, it’s a sad day indeed, with the announcement of the death of former club goalscoring legend, Jim Forrest, aged 79.

Forrest scored an incredible 145 goals in 163 games for the Scottish giants before a move to Preston in 1967.

That tally made him the club’s most prolific striker post-war, so it’s a wonder how he only ever managed to be capped by Scotland on five occasions.

He was part of a golden era at Rangers and even won the treble in his first full campaign with the club in 1962/63 – a season in which he ended with 39 goals despite being just 19 years of age.

Even better was to follow in 64/65 when he scored twice in the League Cup final against Celtic as part of a 57-goal haul in all competitions.

Forrest was also revered at fellow Scottish Premiership side, Aberdeen, after he returned to Scotland and was part of the squad that won the 1970 Scottish Cup.

Both of his former sides meet at Ibrox on Saturday and a minute’s silence before the match is expected to be impeccably observed.
