The January transfer window can’t come soon enough for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, as injuries threaten to derail their start to the 2023/24 campaign.

An apparent long-term issue now means that the Magpies won’t have Sven Botman to call upon for the foreseeable future, and as Premier Injuries report, he joins the suspended Sandro Tonali and fellow injured team-mates, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Lewis Miley and Alexander Isak on the treatment table.

To that end, it’s easy to understand why Newcastle could be major players in the January window, Financial Fair Play rules notwithstanding.

One player that they’re apparently showing an interest in according to UOL is Santos hit-man, Marcos Leonardo.

The outlet report that he’s scored an incredible 21 goals in 42 games during 2023, and he’d surely become a prized striking addition at St. James’ Park.

A strategy from the north east giants is apparently being undertaken at present, with a view to securing his services from early next year.

Given that his reported transfer fee will be somewhere in the region of €20m/€25m (£17.3m/£21.7m), the player is well within the club’s grasp financially.

The player was strongly linked with Roma last summer but the deal to bring him to Europe on that occasion never materialised.

Newcastle will undoubtedly be hoping that they have more success than the Serie A giant in that regard.

Championship leaders Leicester City and third-placed Leeds United are both likely to be watching the weekend’s Copa Libertadores final with interest.

That’s because, according to TeamTalk, they are one of a host of clubs with a vested interest in signing one of Fluminense’s players.

As both clubs look to move back up to the Premier League at the first attempt, it’s always a good idea to strengthen in the middle of the season if possible, as much as to provide competition for places as anything else.

Studious transfer business in January could be the difference in winning a title or losing out, and whilst it’s accepted that finances do play a part of course, there’s a question mark as to how much ambition a club has if they’re prepared to sit on their laurels and hope for the best.

Daniel Farke at Leeds is hardly likely to do that, and Enzo Maresca at Leicester has also shown his ruthlessness when needed.

Whether either are able to acquire Jhon Arias in the new year is unclear at this point, with TeamTalk also noting that Rangers, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Burnley will have scouts at the final to run the rule over the Colombian.

Five goals and three assists from 24 games this season (three as sub) per WhoScored, doesn’t scream prolific, but with so many clubs following the player, there must be something they see in him which is worth investing in.

There’s only a couple of months to go before the January transfer window opens for business and everyone gets to see how well their team does their mid-season business.

Indeed, a good winter window can often be the difference between a good season and a great season.

Clubs that weren’t perhaps in the title conversation before Christmas can gatecrash the party with a handful of brilliant signings.

Similarly, those struggling down the bottom of the table can haul themselves clear with some clever manoeuvring in the transfer market.

It’s a skill in itself but is an essential part of the modern game.

Although Liverpool were left disappointed during the summer window at a failure to land a few of their targets, the Reds have still done remarkably well to keep pace at the top of the table.

If they’re able to keep the same high levels of intensity between now and the window opening, there’s no reason why Jurgen Klopp won’t be celebrating with a trophy or two at season’s end.

Missing out of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, both of whom chose Chelsea over Liverpool, would’ve surely got under the skin of the German, as may the failure to capture 22-year-old, Andre, from Fluminense.

However, the Brazilian has now given the club a ray of hope.

“In this past window I didn’t talk about it, the first time I’m going to talk in more depth will be now,” he was quoted as saying by CONMEBOL Libertadores.

“It really was an irrefutable proposal from the club that plays in a big league. I think every player one day dreams of playing for a big club in Europe, in a big league.

“But I decided to keep my word because when the January window closed, Diniz [Fluminense manager] arrived and told me that he wanted me here until the end of the year.

“We didn’t know that a proposal of that amount would arrive and I told him that, regardless of what happened, I would be there until the end of the season.

“It ended up passing and arriving in the middle of the year, we were still in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. It was a very difficult decision to make. I think if I had accepted this proposal, I don’t know if I would have felt 100% comfortable because I had already agreed with Diniz.

“He really values his word, his honesty. I know that when we do the right things, good things always happen. And in January he told me that without a doubt, if I stayed I would gamble and my value would increase.”

With Ian Maatsen still apparently stalling on a contract extension at Chelsea, he could become a crucial pawn in the Blues pursuit of 19-year-old Boca Juniors ace, Valentin Barco.

The Argentinian left-back is much sought-after with 90Min crediting both Man City and Brighton and Hove Albion with an interest in the player.

Where Maatsen becomes part of the equation is if Chelsea can push for a deal for Barco, they would then allow Maatsen to join Man City.

Clearly, if Pep Guardiola’s side, who are the current favourites to land Barco according to 90Min, manage to get that deal over the line then Maatsen either stays at Stamford Bridge or moves anywhere other than City.

One can understand the Dutchman’s reticence in signing a new deal with the Blues too.

According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old has only played 90 minutes on one occasion this season, and that was in the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon.

In the Premier League, the most minutes he’s managed in one single game is 45, against Fulham, with the sum total of his other five English top-flight appearances coming to 39 minutes.

An £8m release clause for Barco, per 90Min, is well within the grasp of all three Premier League clubs and it remains to be seen which of them will be able to acquire his services and whether Maatsen’s involvement tips the balance.

Liverpool added four new midfielders to their squad this summer but Jurgen Klopp is “obsessed” with trying to bring another young star to Anfield in 2024.

The Reds added Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch to their squad ahead of the current season but have been linked to several midfielders ahead of the winter transfer window.

One target is said to be Man City’s Kalvin Phillips as the England star is expected to leave the Etihad but according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are “obsessed” about signing Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez despite interest in the player from AC Milan and Benfica.

The 21-year-old is making a big impression in Argentina at such as young age having already played 43 times for Boca.

According to the Liverpool Echo via TeamTalk, Alexis Mac Allister is a huge fan of his countryman and has urged the Reds to make a move for the defensive midfielder as soon as possible.

The World Cup winner could play a role in Liverpool winning the race for Fernandez but it remains to be seen if the Merseyside club makes an official move for the Boca star.

Luis Suarez will be without a club come December and Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino has confirmed his intentions to try and bring the striker to MLS.

The Uruguay star has been at Gremio since the start of 2023 having signed for the club following the World Cup. The 36-year-old has gone on to play 43 times for the Brazilian outfit, scoring 18 goals and assisting a further 13.

Suarez is out of contract at the end of this year and the legendary footballer looks set to make the move to Inter Miami as Gerardo Martino has confirmed his intentions to try and bring the striker to MLS.

“Within our analysis of the upcoming season, and the needs we may have, we have an analysis with Luis and an analysis without Luis,” Martino said at a press conference, via Goal.

“So when the moment arrives to make Suarez’s situation with respect to Inter Miami official, we’ll be prepared to go in the corresponding direction.”

Inter Miami want Luis Suarez

Suarez was first linked with a move to the Major League Soccer club in the summer transfer window, however, he instead remained with Gremio.

A move to Inter Miami would see Suarez have a spectacular reunion with former Barcelona teammate and best friend, Lionel Messi, who were devasting together at the Catalan club alongside Neymar.

The duo will be hoping to recreate that success in America should the legendary striker arrive on the East Coast.

Colombia travelled to Ecuador on Tuesday night as part of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign but Los Cafeteros could only come away with a point after a 0-0 draw.

The draw leaves Colombia fifth in the standings with Ecuador right behind them in sixth, however, things could have been a lot better for the away side as Liverpool’s Luis Diaz missed a key penalty in the second half.

Just after the hour mark, the winger had the chance to give his side the lead from the penalty spot but it was a poor penalty to the goalkeeper’s right. It was an easy save for Moises Ramirez in the end and the Liverpool star would love to have it back now.

The Reds star did most of the work to win the penalty in the first place so it is not something fans will hold against him.

A Lionel Messi brace helped Argentina to a 2-0 win over Peru on Tuesday night as the Inter Miami star broke yet another record.

Messi returned to the starting 11 following his recent injury and the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner put on a show in Peru.

The 36-year-old opened the scoring after 32 minutes as the Barcelona legend latched onto a Nicolas Gonzalez cross to produce a stunning finish.

10 minutes later, the World Cup winner had a second, when Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez cut the ball back to the Inter Miami star who then curled it into the back of the net.

The brace helped Messi break another record as the Argentine now has the most goals ever scored in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, overtaking his good friend Luis Suarez.

Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0 on Tuesday night in their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez inspired the victory.

The Reds star opened the scoring in the match just before halftime as the forward latched onto a Maxi Aruajo cross to produce a bullet header past Ederson in the Brazil net.

It wasn’t until minute 77 that Uruguay would double their lead and it was the Liverpool man involved again as Nunez wiggled his way past several Brazil stars to assist Nicolas de la Cruz.

This was a huge win for Marcelo Bielsa’s men and it saw them overtake Brazil into second place in the standings behind Argentina.

Colombia manager Néstor Lorenzo has stated that he worries about the expectations placed on Luis Diaz with the national team as the country’s best player looks to help his country to the next World Cup this week.

Los Cafeteros failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and the country will not want that to happen again ahead of the 2026 edition with it being so close to home.

Lorenzo’s side have one victory and one draw across their opening two matches and sit third in the table at its early stages. Colombia face Uruguay and Ecuador during this international period and ahead of those important matches, manager Néstor Lorenzo says he is worried about the expectations placed on star man Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz is key for Colombia

Lorenzo believes that the Liverpool man is subject to unrealistic expectations to impress every time he puts on the Colombia jersey.

In a recent press conference, the Colombia coach has made his feelings about the matter clear via DAVEOCKOP: “The first thing we did was tell him that he should not put the team on his shoulders nor that the team’s responsibility weighs on him.

“People expect him to score four goals per game and that’s not normal. His performance has been good, and we hope he improves with training and knowledge with his teammates.

“In football you need partnerships and in two [international breaks] he was injured and missed those games that would have given him a little more rapprochement.

“We have confidence in him, in his position and in his role. We don’t want him to be the savior either.”

“I notice that if he doesn’t score two goals he’s played badly, and that’s not the case,” Lorenzo continued.

“At Liverpool, he plays every three days and here every month.”
