Real Madrid have been offered a chance to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The England international has struggled to settle into Pep Guardiola’s squad since making the move from Leeds two seasons ago.

At the time, Phillips was regarded as one of the best players in his position in the league, which is why Manchester City were willing to spend £45m to secure his signature.

But the 27-year-old has made 27 appearances for the Treble winners since with only five of them being starts.

It is no secret that the club are willing to sell him and a host of clubs have shown interest over the past few months.

The most surprising of which is Real Madrid who according to Spanish news outlet Defensa Central, have been contacted by Phillips’ agent over a potential transfer.

Los Blancos currently have one of the best midfields in the world and with Jude Bellingham performing exceptionally well, it’s difficult to see Phillips making the move.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent weeks.

A report from Football Insider claims that the 27-year-old could now join Newcastle during the January transfer window.

Manchester City are not looking to stand in the midfielder’s way and they will let the England international leave so that he can play more often.

Phillips is not a key member of Guardiola’s first-team plans, but he could prove to be a useful acquisition for Newcastle. The Magpies will need to sign a quality defensive midfielder, especially after Sandro Tonali was banned for his involvement in an illegal beating scandal.

Phillips has not been able to live up to the expectations since his £45 million move to Manchester City in 2022 and he has not been a regular starter for them either. A move to Newcastle would give him a fresh start and help him get back to his best once again.

He was regarded as one of the finest midfielders in the league during his time at Leeds United. The defensive midfielder will help shield the back four and allow the creative players to operate with more freedom.

Kalvin Phillips is wanted by Newcastle United

Eddie Howe could help him regain his form and confidence in the coming months. If he manages to impress during his loan spell at Newcastle, the Magpies might just sign him permanently at the end of the season.

Regular football will help the midfielder cement his place in the England starting lineup ahead of the European Championships as well.

Sandro Tonali’s 10-month ban has provided Newcastle with a real headache heading into the January transfer window as Eddie Howe now needs to replace the Italian.

That was not on the cards until recently but seeing as the midfielder is not going to feature for the rest of the season, the Magpies need to fill that gap in their squad.

However, Newcastle need to keep an eye on Financial Fair Play rules and a loan move for Man City’s Kalvin Phillips could be the route they go down.

Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Graeme Bailey has been discussing how Newcastle could replace Tonali.

“Newcastle know they need to replace Tonali. Another DM/number eight wasn’t in the plans at all in January,” Bailey said.

“FFP is still a real issue for Newcastle. They’re already in the red in terms of FFP, so what do they do come January? I’d say it’s likely a loan deal that they’ll need to replace Tonali. They had to do that with Lewis Hall due to FFP.

“In terms of loan deals for these players, there are options out there, Kalvin Phillips being the main one, and City would let him out on loan. City would like to sell him but a loan with a view would suit all parties.”

Newcastle United have begun sounding out January replacements for Sandro Tonali.

Banned for 10 months for illegal betting-related activity, Tonali, 23, will now miss the rest of the 2023-24 season, and some.

Consequently, after being signed for £55 million in the summer, Newcastle United must now work on bringing in a suitable replacement for the suspended Italian.

Although several names are already being linked with a switch to St. James’ Park, one player who appears top of Eddie Howe’s list is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Struggling for regular game time at the Etihad, Phillips, by his own recent admission, is desperate for more minutes as he seeks to be part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next summer’s European Championship, and that could prompt a mid-season move.

And a switch to Newcastle United, albeit on loan due to financial fair play rules, would prove the perfect outcome for almost everyone involved.

According to a recent report from the Telegraph, while the Cityzens are open to parting ways with the England international, they’re unlikely to sanction a loan move when other clubs could consider making a permanent transfer offer.

The good news for Geordie fans is that the player himself is thought to want to make the move happen.

Of course, the final decision will be made by the club, but considering how desperate Phillips is to play, Pep Guardiola may feel morally obliged to honour his midfielder’s wishes.

Manchester City beat Young Boys in the Champions League 3-1 to retain top spot of Group G, with goals from Manuel Akanji and Erling Haaland (x2).

City dominated throughout, having 26 shots (14 on target), holding 69% possession and making 723 total passes. However Young Boys made it difficult equalising in the 52nd minute to make it 1-1, and then holding City out until the 67th minute when Haaland made it 2-1.

Read on for our City player ratings, and who stood out for the Citizens…

Ederson – 7 – Ederson made three saves, two of which were inside his box and also made two high claims. However did get lobbed for the goal.

Nathan Ake – 7 – Solid defensively down his left side, made two clearances, two tackles and one last man tackle. Also made two key passes from left back.

Ruben Dias – 7 – Was very important in build up for City, making 94 of his 97 passes and playing six of his eight long balls. Dias also made two clearances and one block.

Manuel Akanji – 8 – Scored the opener for City, as well as doing his part defensively with two clearances and a block. Also made two key passes.

Rodri – 8 – Was a huge positive for City having Rodri back in the side, so calm on the ball, got an assist and made 103 of his 110 passes, with four key passes.

Rico Lewis – 7 – The energetic youngster covered a lot of ground both defensively and in central areas, made one key pass and made two out of two long balls.

Jack Grealish – 7.5 – Very direct down the wing, completed three out of three dribble attempts and took three shots (two of which were on target). Also made three key passes and created two big chances.

Mateo Kovacic – 6 – Played slightly higher up on the left side for City in central zones, played one key pass but wasn’t creative enough in that area of the pitch.

Matheus Nunes – 7 – Played slightly higher in midfield too but on the right, made two key passes, completed three out of four long balls and competed three of his five dribble attempts.

Jeremy Doku – 7 – Did well in his 72 minutes, was looking to be direct and ask questions of the Young Boys defense. Completed two key passes, seven out of eight dribbles and had two shots on target.

Erling Haaland – 9 – Scored a brace to secure the victory for City, did what he does best and scored the goals. Had a whopping eight shots, five of which were on target.greali

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has taken to his exclusive Daily Briefing column to discuss the recent Liverpool links with Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The England international isn’t seeing much playing time at Man City at the moment, so it seems likely that he could leave the Etihad Stadium in the near future, though it remains to be seen where he might go next.

Phillips could surely be a tempting option for Liverpool after they lost so many midfield players over the summer, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both moving to Saudi Arabia, while James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita left as free agents.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo ended up joining the Reds, but one imagines there could be room for someone like Phillips as well.

Kalvin Phillips in action for Manchester City

Still, Romano is not aware of anything concrete happening there, so it might be that this is just speculation for the moment.

“As previously mentioned, it’s looking increasingly likely for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City this January, but I’m not aware of any negotiation with Liverpool at this stage, despite what’s been reported elsewhere,” Romano explained.

“It’s very quiet around Liverpool as of now, no decision will be made in October for their transfer plans in the January window – it will be decided later this year.”

Liverpool will consider making a move for Man City’s Kalvin Phillips in January amid transfer rumours that the England star will leave the Premier League champions.

Things have not gone to plan for the 27-year-old since moving to the Etihad last summer from Leeds as the midfielder has seen very little football and is at the back of Pep Guardiola’s current pecking order.

Phillips started just four games across all competitions last season and played just 290 minutes – the equivalent of three full matches.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, Bayern Munich are interested in the Man City star but no contact has been made at present.

The outlet states that Liverpool may be an option and that Juventus are also believed to be interested in the England star.

The Reds are still being linked to midfield players despite adding Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch to their squad this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is believed to be a fan of Phillips and it will be interesting to see if the Merseyside club makes a move for the player in January.

Hello and welcome to today’s exclusive column for the Daily Briefing – click here to subscribe to unlock the complete version, and for more content from myself, Ben Jacobs, Jonathan Johnson and our other columnists.

Jadon Sancho – There is still no price for Sancho, it will be important to see if it’s a permanent transfer or a loan – they will be open to any opportunity, though of course they’d probably favour a permanent transfer. Still, they know that in January it won’t be easy to find someone willing to pay something in the region of, and this is just my opinion, £50-55m, is not going to be easy. There is no change at the moment, no apology from Sancho, so it looks 90% over between him and the club. It’s similar to the situation with Cristiano Ronaldo a year ago – it’s really complicated, and Erik ten Hag doesn’t want any difficulties like this inside the club – FULL STORY HERE

Takefusa Kubo – In terms of replacing Sancho, there have been reports about Takefusa Kubo and in my opinion he would be a fantastic option, Kubo is a top player. But I’m afraid there’s absolutely nothing concrete happening there from what I’m told. Kubo is a crucial player for Real Sociedad, also Real Madrid are still keeping an eye on him for the future. I’m not aware of any talk with other clubs at this stage, and I don’t think it’s one for January honestly – FULL STORY HERE

Kalvin Phillips – From speaking to sources, it’s very likely for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window. That’s the idea, that’s the feeling, because the player both in public and in private has been very clear that he wants to play as a starter – FULL STORY HERE

Kalvin Phillips in action for Manchester City

Ivan Toney – The feeling of sources is that Toney’s asking price could be around £60-65m – Brentford would ideally want more than this, but the feeling at the moment is that for that kind of price the deal could be done – FULL STORY HERE

Aaron Ramsdale – The Aaron Ramsdale situation could be one to keep open, but at the moment I’m not aware of any negotiations. The goalkeeper market is a bit different from outfield players – it’s not easy for a goalkeeper to find a top club who can guarantee playing time – FULL STORY HERE

Cole Palmer – Chelsea deserve immense credit for the signing of Cole Palmer, because he’s been fantastic. West Ham and Brighton also wanted Palmer this summer, but Chelsea were ready to pay a big amount of money to Man City to make it happen, and it made the difference. For me, Palmer was also absolutely ready to play at Manchester City’s level too, but City have so many top players and so it’s understandable that they decided to sell when the right offer came in – FULL STORY HERE

Victor Osimhen – Despite rumours, I can 100% guarantee that Victor Osimhen has not agreed anything with Liverpool or any club. He’s not negotiating any contract or salary with any other club, even if there is interest from around Europe, which is normal. Still, it’s also true that Osimhen has not agreed anything with Napoli, despite receiving a contract proposal which was the biggest in Napoli’s history – FULL STORY HERE

Assan Ouedraogo – There have been reports about Liverpool being keen on Schalke youngster Assan Ouedraogo, and yes it’s true that Liverpool like him – FULL STORY HERE

Kalvin Phillips is ‘very likely’ to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window.

That’s according to leading transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano, who believes it is only a matter of time before the outcasted midfielder makes the switch away from the Etihad.

Despite signing for the Cityzens just over 12 months ago, Phillips, 27, who, according to Spotrac, earns £150,000-per week, is a candidate to be offloaded after failing to nail down a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s first team.

Starting in just two Premier League games since the start of last season, the former Leeds United academy graduate is now facing an uncertain future, and while clubs, including Newcastle United and West Ham United (The Sun), are already being linked with a mid-season deal, fans are being left to wonder where the 27-year-old will be playing in the new year.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Kalvin Phillips leaving Man City?

“The feeling that I have from some sources is that it is very, very likely for Kalvin Phillips to leave in the January transfer window,” Romano said on Monday’s episode of the DeBrief podcast.

“That’s the idea and that’s the feeling because the player in public, but also in private, has been very honest with people close to him; he wants to play, he wants to be a regular starter.

“[…] Also for the Euros for Phillips, it is always important to be on the pitch and have the opportunity to develop. He’s being super professional, that’s why Manchester City are happy with his approach and mentality, but at the same time, they know if they receive a proposal in the January window it’s going to be very likely for Kalvin to leave.

“At the moment, it’s not something they have decided in a direct meeting, but both sides, the player and the club, see the situation in the same way with a likely exit in the January window.”

During his time at the Eithad, Phillips, who has five years left on his deal, has featured in just 26 games, across all competitions, and has failed to register a single goal or assist.

Manchester City have been linked again with a potential transfer move for West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta, but Fabrizio Romano says a decision has not yet been made on potentially looking to replace Kalvin Phillips.

Writing in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing, Romano explained that City had an interest in Paqueta in the summer before signing Matheus Nunes instead, casting doubt over whether they’ll go back in for the Brazil international.

There is the issue of Phillips likely leaving the Etihad Stadium this January, but Romano says City are yet to make a decision on replacing the England international, as that could also hinge on what kind of deal the club get for him.

“Finally, we’re again seeing Lucas Paqueta being linked with Manchester City, which I think is to be expected for a quality player, but it’s just speculation for now as far as I’m aware,” Romano said.

Lucas Paqueta in action for West Ham

“Paqueta has always been appreciated by City, as we’ve known for a long time but there’s nothing new happening at the moment. City signed Matheus Nunes in the summer in that position, so another similar signing in midfield might not make sense as a priority.

“Of course, Kalvin Phillips could leave, as I reported last week, but for now there’s no decision made on the midfielder position for January, and it will also depend on the formula for the Phillips deal.”

One imagines Phillips might initially go out on loan rather than leave permanently, so that could presumably impact how much City can spend this winter, meaning a top talent like Paqueta would likely be very difficult to get, especially in the middle of the season.
