The mood at Man United is one of pessimism at present as the Red Devils recover from being dominated by Man City last weekend. 

Erik ten Hag’s men were beaten 3-0 by their rivals in front of a packed Old Trafford on Sunday but it could have been more as City excelled in the second half of the clash.

The defeat leaves Man United eighth in the table having lost half of the matches they have played this campaign, which is well below the pre-season expectations.

Even in the matches United have won, they did not look convincing, and the pressure is starting to heat up on Ten Hag. The mood around the club is not great and journalist Ben Jacobs has given an insight into how things are within the Dutch manager’s squad.

Writing in his latest exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs said that the dressing room at Man United is tense but there are players trying to improve it.

“Not all the blame can be placed on Erik ten Hag, who retains the faith of the Manchester hierarchy, but there’s no doubt the dressing room is tense,” the journalist wrote.

“There are players in it, Jadon Sancho included – at least before he was banished from the first team – who feel the Manchester United boss is too much of a taskmaster.

“But there are also leaders, like Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Scott McTominay who are positive influences off the field and doing all they can to improve the mood and keep everyone united.”

Andre Onana – 6 – Made seven saves, four from inside the box, but of course did concede three therefore can’t be much higher rated.

Victor Lindelof – 5.5 – Had to deal with Foden drifting inside and Walker overlapping down the right flank. Did make two interceptions, one clearance and one block but was beaten on quite a few occasions to let City into dangerous areas down the right flank.

Jonny Evans – 5 – Lost all four of his duels and wasn’t aggressive enough to deal with the likes of Haaland and Alvarez.

Harry Maguire – 6.5 – The more aggressive of the defenders, getting tighter with Haaland, winning all four of his duels and making eight clearances.

Diogo Dalot – 5 – Struggled up against Grealish when isolated in 1v1 areas, did make two tackles, one interception and three clearances, but was beaten down the left on a few occasions and struggled to keep Grealish quiet.

Sofyan Amrabat – 5 – Was subbed after 45 minutes, received a yellow card and was dribbled past once in a central area.

Christian Eriksen – 6 – Tried to get on the ball for United in deeper areas and make things happen, made one key pass and created one big chance. Also completed two out of two long balls.

Marcus Rashford – 4 – Failed to get himself involved enough as the United outlet, the space was there out wide but he didn’t use it. Only managed one shot (off target) and completed only one of his five dribble attempts.

Scott McTominay – 6.5 – Was United’s main threat, having two shots on target, completing his only dribble attempt and his only long ball attempt. Also did his bit defensively with four tackles, one interception, two blocks and two clearances.

Bruno Fernandes – 5 – Head dropped and didn’t look interested. Did make two key passes and two shots (one on target and one off target) but didn’t lead by example as captain and could’ve done a lot more.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5.5 – Gave away the penalty for City’s first goal, but did try to make things happen in attack for United. Made two key passes, completed two out of two dribbles and won four of his seven ground duels.

Subs: Mason Mount 5, Sergio Reguilon 4, Alejandro Garnacho 4, Antony 3, Anthony Martial 4.

Maguire scored the only goal for Manchester United in their 1-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League, to get their first points on the board in their group.

The 30-year-old has made six appearances in all competitions this campaign for the Red Devils, scoring one goal, providing one assist and totalling 386 minutes of football. He has also helped keep two clean sheets in those six games.

United sit 8th in the Premier League on 15 points, winning five and losing four of their opening nine games.

Now talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believes that “sheep fans” of Man United owe the 30-year-old an apology.

“I feel that a lot of Manchester United fans owe Harry Maguire an apology, first of all,” the former footballer said.

“What he has been through, he has had fans booing him. He has been away on pre-season tours and you got sheep booing him, sheep fans who don’t have a clue about football booing him and he has got through it.”

Not only has Maguire played well in all the games he has filled in, in, but Tuesday night’s Champions League group game against FC Copenhagen saw the Englishman head home the winning, and potentially tournament-saving, goal.

And Jones believes it is performances such as last night’s that could force Ten Hag to re-think his previous transfer plans.

“I don’t think Maguire will end up leaving in January,” he told GiveMeSport.

“I know many people are reporting to the contrary that he will. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I just feel like we’re in a moment when Man Utd are struggling for stability anywhere.

“They don’t have the money to go and strengthen that area of the pitch, even if the Sir Jim Ratcliffe investment has moved forward by the time we get to January, is it going to move on far enough that United can suddenly sign a top-level centre-back? I doubt it. So, I think United should be pleased with the fact that Maguire has managed to get himself in some sort of form.

“I think that Ten Hag made a mistake when Maguire played the Carabao Cup game against Crystal Palace and did well when they won 3-0 but then three days later left him out of the team when United lost 1-0. I felt he missed an opportunity there to build on that Maguire moment. Since then, Maguire has gone in for two league games, seen the whole thing out, and they’ve come through it.”

Despite seeing a summer transfer to West Ham United fall through, Maguire has remained heavily linked with the Hammers ahead of the mid-season window.

The defender, who, according to Spotrac, earns around £190,000-per week, has up to three years left on his contract and is currently valued at £20 million (TM).

Diogo Dalot – 7.5 – Very solid game from Dalot, stopped everything down his side making four clearances, one block and one tackle, and also making one key pass when getting forward down the right.

Raphael Varane – 7 – His return from injury was a boost for United, making five clearances, one block, completing five of his eight long balls and winning six out of six aerial duels.

Harry Maguire – 8 – The decisive goal scorer for United on the day, and was very solid defensively too. winning five of his seven duels. Big performance from the Englishman.

Sergio Reguilon – 6.5 – Managed 63 minutes at left back and didn’t do too badly, however he did get dribbled past a couple of times on his left flank. Going forwards did offer for United on the overlap, and made one key pass.

Scott McTominay – 6.5 – Covered a lot of ground in midfield, going box to box and making one key pass and creating one big chance. Did pick up a yellow card in the second half and took three off target shots.

Sofyan Amrabat – 5 – Only managed 45 minutes as he went off with a suspected injury, had a pass accuracy of 89% completing 24 of his 27 passes.

Marcus Rashford – 7 – Wanted to be direct down the left, made two key passes, two out of two long balls, and took three shots (one on target, one off target and one being blocked).

Bruno Fernandes – 7.5 – Fernandes created a lot for United, making four key passes, competing four out of six long balls and knitting everything together nicely for the Red Devils.

Antony – 5 – Only played 63 minutes but wasn’t able to have much of an imprint on the game, completed two of his four dribbles but didn’t create anything significant.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5.5 – Not his best game, missing a big chance and taking three shots all off target or blocked. He did make two key passes and hold the ball up well at times so that deserves some credit.

It was a night of redemption for Man United stars Harry Maguire and Andre Onana against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The centre-back headed in what turned out to be the only goal of the game in what was another disappointing team performance, whilst the keeper flung himself to his left to keep out a last-kick-of-the-game penalty to ensure that the Red Devils earned all three points from the game.

There may be a school of thought that suggests Maguire’s game was a temporary respite from being sat on the sidelines at Old Trafford, however, the collapse of a potential January move for a new centre-back has arguably handed Maguire a new lease of life.

According to Football Insider, a move for Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo has collapsed.

With prospective minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, also owning Nice, having the Frenchman hop from one of Sir Jim’s teams to another would likely have made perfect sense, however, this appears to be far from happening at present.

That’s unlikely to please manager, Erik ten Hag, as he looks for longer term solutions to United’s defensive issues.

Maguire’s own aspirations need to be called into question too, should he end up back on the bench and appear happy with his lot after Tuesday.

With a European Championship just around the corner he needs to be playing regularly, and the collapse of a potential Todibo deal as well as Maguire’s timely intervention really should see to it that he’s back at the heart of United’s defence more regularly.

If he becomes third or fourth choice once more when United have all of their centre-backs fit again, then Maguire simply has to leave.

The World Cup winner has struggled with injury issues and Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood believes Harry Maguire should be in the team ahead of the former Real Madrid centre-back.

“I think Varane gets away with it, I really do. He is in for one week. Plays a couple of games and then he goes out injured again.
