The mood at Man United is one of pessimism at present as the Red Devils recover from being dominated by Man City last weekend.

Erik ten Hag’s men were beaten 3-0 by their rivals in front of a packed Old Trafford on Sunday but it could have been more as City excelled in the second half of the clash.

The defeat leaves Man United eighth in the table having lost half of the matches they have played this campaign, which is well below the pre-season expectations.

Even in the matches United have won, they did not look convincing, and the pressure is starting to heat up on Ten Hag. The mood around the club is not great and journalist Ben Jacobs has given an insight into how things are within the Dutch manager’s squad.

Ten Hag is under pressure at Man United

Writing in his latest exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs said that the dressing room at Man United is tense but there are players trying to improve it.

“Not all the blame can be placed on Erik ten Hag, who retains the faith of the Manchester hierarchy, but there’s no doubt the dressing room is tense,” the journalist wrote.

“There are players in it, Jadon Sancho included – at least before he was banished from the first team – who feel the Manchester United boss is too much of a taskmaster.

“But there are also leaders, like Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Scott McTominay who are positive influences off the field and doing all they can to improve the mood and keep everyone united.”

Manchester United were beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford by rivals Manchester City, as United struggled to get anything going.

A brace from Erling Haaland and a goal from Phil Foden secured the victory for City, giving United their fifth loss of the Premier League campaign after 10 games.

Read on for our Manchester United player ratings, and who disappointed in the Manchester derby…

Andre Onana – 6 – Made seven saves, four from inside the box, but of course did concede three therefore can’t be much higher rated.

Victor Lindelof – 5.5 – Had to deal with Foden drifting inside and Walker overlapping down the right flank. Did make two interceptions, one clearance and one block but was beaten on quite a few occasions to let City into dangerous areas down the right flank.

Jonny Evans – 5 – Lost all four of his duels and wasn’t aggressive enough to deal with the likes of Haaland and Alvarez.

Harry Maguire – 6.5 – The more aggressive of the defenders, getting tighter with Haaland, winning all four of his duels and making eight clearances.

Diogo Dalot – 5 – Struggled up against Grealish when isolated in 1v1 areas, did make two tackles, one interception and three clearances, but was beaten down the left on a few occasions and struggled to keep Grealish quiet.

Sofyan Amrabat – 5 – Was subbed after 45 minutes, received a yellow card and was dribbled past once in a central area.

Christian Eriksen – 6 – Tried to get on the ball for United in deeper areas and make things happen, made one key pass and created one big chance. Also completed two out of two long balls.

Marcus Rashford – 4 – Failed to get himself involved enough as the United outlet, the space was there out wide but he didn’t use it. Only managed one shot (off target) and completed only one of his five dribble attempts.

Scott McTominay – 6.5 – Was United’s main threat, having two shots on target, completing his only dribble attempt and his only long ball attempt. Also did his bit defensively with four tackles, one interception, two blocks and two clearances.

Bruno Fernandes – 5 – Head dropped and didn’t look interested. Did make two key passes and two shots (one on target and one off target) but didn’t lead by example as captain and could’ve done a lot more.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5.5 – Gave away the penalty for City’s first goal, but did try to make things happen in attack for United. Made two key passes, completed two out of two dribbles and won four of his seven ground duels.

Subs: Mason Mount 5, Sergio Reguilon 4, Alejandro Garnacho 4, Antony 3, Anthony Martial 4.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has recently been handed a 10-month ban for gambling breaches and the Premier League club are looking at potential alternatives.

A report from TeamTalk claims that Newcastle United are keen on signing the Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Apparently, Eddie Howe is an admirer of the Scottish international midfielder and the Magpies could look to sign the 26-year-old in January.

Newcastle will have to pay a fee of around £40 million in order to sign the player. West Ham tried to sign the player during the summer transfer window and they had an offer of around £35 million rejected for the player.

The 26-year-old needs to play regularly and move to Newcastle would be ideal for him. Newcastle are reportedly serious about signing him and it remains to be seen whether they can get the deal done.

The Magpies are competing in the UEFA Champions League and they need adequate quality and depth in their squad. The loss of Tonali for the remainder of the season will come as a huge blow and Newcastle will have to compensate with proper replacements.

Scott McTominay in action for Manchester United

McTominay could prove to be a useful acquisition for Newcastle. He is well settled in the Premier League and he will be looking to showcase his qualities at St James’ Park. The midfielder has been starved of gametime at Old Trafford and he will be desperate to succeed at Newcastle. His determination to succeed will be an added bonus for Newcastle and Howe.

Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in the world and they should be able to afford the £40 million asking price for the Scotland international.

Manchester United managed to get their first win in the Champions League this season with a 1-0 victory over Copenhagen at Old Trafford.

The only goalscorer of the game was Harry Maguire in the 72nd minute, to give United the lead and secure them the three points.

Read on for our United player ratings, and who stood out for the Red Devils…

Andre Onana – 8.5 – Saved a penalty last minute of the game to secure the victory for United, making four saves throughout the game.

Diogo Dalot – 7.5 – Very solid game from Dalot, stopped everything down his side making four clearances, one block and one tackle, and also making one key pass when getting forward down the right.

Raphael Varane – 7 – His return from injury was a boost for United, making five clearances, one block, completing five of his eight long balls and winning six out of six aerial duels.

Harry Maguire – 8 – The decisive goal scorer for United on the day, and was very solid defensively too. winning five of his seven duels. Big performance from the Englishman.

Sergio Reguilon – 6.5 – Managed 63 minutes at left back and didn’t do too badly, however he did get dribbled past a couple of times on his left flank. Going forwards did offer for United on the overlap, and made one key pass.

Scott McTominay – 6.5 – Covered a lot of ground in midfield, going box to box and making one key pass and creating one big chance. Did pick up a yellow card in the second half and took three off target shots.

Sofyan Amrabat – 5 – Only managed 45 minutes as he went off with a suspected injury, had a pass accuracy of 89% completing 24 of his 27 passes.

Marcus Rashford – 7 – Wanted to be direct down the left, made two key passes, two out of two long balls, and took three shots (one on target, one off target and one being blocked).

Bruno Fernandes – 7.5 – Fernandes created a lot for United, making four key passes, competing four out of six long balls and knitting everything together nicely for the Red Devils.

Antony – 5 – Only played 63 minutes but wasn’t able to have much of an imprint on the game, completed two of his four dribbles but didn’t create anything significant.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5.5 – Not his best game, missing a big chance and taking three shots all off target or blocked. He did make two key passes and hold the ball up well at times so that deserves some credit.

Subs: Christian Eriksen 7, Victor Lindelof 6, Alejandro Garnacho 4, Anthony Martial 4.

Once Newcastle’s Champions League encounter with Borussia Dortmund is out of the way, it’s expected that Sandro Tonali will receive news about the length of his ban from the game.

The Italian will almost certainly be ruled out of the remainder of the 2023/24 season and also miss the European Championship were Italy to qualify.

In the space of a few months his Magpies career will have gone from the highest of highs with a debut goal, to the lowest point possible – with Newcastle effectively being punished for things Tonali allegedly did whilst still at Milan.

To coin a phrase it’s no use crying over spilt milk, and the north east giants need to quickly identify a replacement for Tonali who will be ready to join them at the earliest possible opportunity in the January transfer window.

The Athletic (subscription required) have drawn up a list of names for players that Eddie Howe and his backroom staff might consider, and one stands out above all others.

Man United’s Scott McTominay has enjoyed a mini renaissance at the club with his recent goalscoring exploits, but it’s doubtful that he remains in Erik ten Hag’s long-term plans at Old Trafford.

An experienced and hard working player that can operate as a number six or eight, the midfielder would give Howe desirable options and isn’t likely to break the bank – important as Newcastle try to navigate FFP.

Despite being back in favour at Man United at present, when everyone is fit and firing, it’s likely that McTominay will drop back to the bench, and therefore a move makes sense from the player’s perspective too.

Man United’s dominance against Sheffield United finally paid off in the 76th minute, with Diogo Dalot scoring an absolute pearler from outside the area.

The Red Devils had to be patient but once they’d worked an opening, the finish was glorious.

Scott McTominay had opened the scoring for the visitors in the first-half but then handled a few minutes later to allow the hosts back into it, Oli McBurnie slamming home from the spot.

As the game swung from one end to the other without a breakthrough, it was left to Dalot to silence Bramall Lane.

Man United’s Scott McTominay went from hero to zero in the space of six minutes at Bramall Lane.

The Scot continued his great recent goalscoring form by bobbling home the opener, despite the attentions of a number of Sheffield United defenders.

The Red Devils hadn’t shown any urgency to that point so the goal gave them some breathing space, however, the head didn’t last long.

McTominay diverted a cross away with his arm, and Oli McBurnie made no mistake from the spot.

Whilst Saturday’s fixture at Bramall Lane isn’t quite a must win for Erik ten Hag and Man United, anything less than three points against Sheffield United will be seen as a huge opportunity missed by the Red Devils.

The Dutchman, whilst taking the fixture as seriously as any other, has switched his team around for the Saturday night encounter, with Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay coming into the starting line up.

Andre Onana keeps his place in goal, with Maguire partnered by Victor Lindelof and the full-back slots taken by Sofyan Amrabat and Diogo Dalot.

McTominay and Jonny Evans will sit behind a three of Antony, Bruno Fernandes, and Marcus Rashford with Rasmus Hojlund ploughing a lone furrow up front.

Sheffield United are already fighting for their Premier League lives.

The Blades are rock bottom of the English top-flight with only one point to their name so far. Just six goals scored and 22 conceded hints at the task ahead of the hosts.

Man United may just have turned the corner with Scott McTominay’s late, late show against Brentford, and if they can get the three points things start looking a lot brighter for ten Hag and the squad.

The manner of the performance is always important to the Red Devils, though getting the result on Saturday, however it comes, is paramount.

Stan Collymore has said that West Ham should sign Scott McTominay in January, stating he would “thrive” under David Moyes for the Hammers.

Writing in his CaughtOffside column, Collymore said there is links from Newcastle who are after a midfielder with the current Sandro Tonali situation, however he believes Kalvin Phillips makes more sense for Newcastle, while McTominay would “thrive” under Moyes.

Collymore expects West Ham to make another attempt to sign the Scotland international in January, however he is unsure if Manchester United could get a £30 million offer again as they did in the summer for McTominay.

McTominay has made six appearances in all competitions for United this campaign, totalling 206 minutes of football. However in his most recent game he was labelled the hero, as he came from the bench to score two goals in stoppage time and secure a victory against Brentford for Manchester United.

Scott McTominay is likely to be on the lookout for a new club once the January transfer window opens, and despite being a player capable of fitting Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United system, a familiar club could reignite their interest.

That is the view of former Liverpool and Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore, who believes West Ham United will attempt to sign the Scotland international again despite seeing a £30 million offer rejected in the summer (MEN).

Even though he produced a stunning winning brace against Brentford just before the international break, McTominay, 26, has been forced to play nothing more than a bit-part role under Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United.

Consequently, unlikely to move ahead of the likes of Mason Mason, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in his manager’s pecking order, the upcoming transfer window could finally see the United academy graduate move on.

And Collymore thinks although Newcastle United could turn to McTominay to provide cover for Sandro Tonali, who is almost certain to face a lengthy ban for illegal betting, the Scotland international could become the subject of another approach from David Moyes’ Hammers.

“It seems unlikely he’ll ever become a regular at Old Trafford under Erik Ten Hag,” Collymore said in an exclusive interview.

“He would certainly be the type of player who could fit Eddie Howe’s high-work rate system [at Newcastle United], but I have a sneaky feeling David Moyes and West Ham will be back again in the New Year for him.

“McTominay would thrive under Moyes; I am sure of it – can United get a £30 million, or higher, offer again though? – We’ll have to see.”

Since being promoted to Manchester United’s senior first team in 2017, McTominay, who has up to three years left on his deal, has directly contributed to 26 goals in 215 games in all competitions.
