The fortunes of both Arsenal and Chelsea in the second half of the Premier League season could be dictated by their dealings in the upcoming transfer window.

At present it’s fair to say that the Gunners are in a healthier position than the Blues, however, the 2023/24 season is still only 10 games old.

With 28 games left to play, that’s a whopping 84 points to play for. Once Mauricio Pochettino gets his side to click, there’s every chance that they’ll climb back into the upper echelons of the Premier League table.

That could be easier to achieve with Brentford’s Ivan Toney in situ.

The England international forward will be champing at the bit to play after eight months out and for £80m, according to the Evening Standard, any other club stands a chance of seeing the hit-man line up for them in the second half of the campaign.

If there’s one thing that Toney guarantees it’s goals.

Chelsea are still suffering in that regard so their need for a proven scorer is obvious, whilst his goals could help push Arsenal forward to their first title in 20 years.

It isn’t clear at this point with one, either or neither will place a bid for Toney’s services, but it’s not often that a player of his calibre comes onto the market at what is a relative bargain in terms of fees by today’s standards.

At 27 years of age, he remains in his prime as a player, albeit with a little rust after so long out of the game.

Let battle commence…

Chelsea will enter both transfer markets in 2024 in search of a striker and transfer expert Ben Jacobs has provided an update on where the West London club are at with their search.

The Blues signed Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal this summer, who has originally meant to provide backup to Christopher Nkunku, but the French star picked up a serious injury during pre-season which has kept him out of action ever since.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have struggled to score goals at times this season, with Chelsea netting just 13 so far, half of what Aston Villa and Newcastle have managed.

Two names that have been linked to Stamford Bridge have been Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney and journalist Ben Jacobs has an update on Pochettino’s search for a number nine.

Nicolas Jackson joined Chelsea this summer

Ben Jacobs on Chelsea’s search for a striker

Writing in his latest exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs said that Chelsea have a chance of landing Toney but Osimhen will be nearly impossible.

The journalist said: “Chelsea do want another striker in 2024 but no final decision has been made yet as to whether to move in January or wait until summer. There is faith in Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja and a feeling within the club that Christopher Nkunku’s return from a knee injury could make all the difference.

“It will be near impossible for Chelsea to sign Victor Osimhen mid-season. Although the Nigerian forward hasn’t extended his Napoli contract, Aurelio De Laurentiis just doesn’t want to sell in January. There’s no doubt Osimhen will leave for over €100m if he doesn’t extend, but Napoli are prepared to wait until summer unless they receive an astronomical offer.

“Ivan Toney is a more ‘gettable’ target in January. Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs have all held internal discussions about him. Brentford want at least £65m, but several sources feel that number could be closer to £80m.”

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the Arsenal striker situation ahead of this January’s transfer window.

Eddie Nketiah was in superb form to score a hat-trick in the win over Sheffield United at the weekend, and Romano insists the Gunners are very happy with him, despite there also being some interest in Brentford striker Ivan Toney as well.

For now, Romano insists Arsenal have nothing agreed over Toney, who is also wanted by Chelsea and who won’t come cheap, so it’s currently looking unlikely that his arrival can be taken as a given, and therefore Nketiah’s place in Mikel Arteta’s squad is surely safe.

“Arsenal really wanted him (Nketiah) to stay, they extended his contract months ago, so the idea has always been to trust him. I have no indications of him leaving,” Romano told The Debrief podcast.

Ivan Toney in action for Brentford

“Toney is really appreciated by Arsenal, same at Chelsea, so I think the race is absolutely open. At the moment nothing is agreed with the player or Brentford, but for sure he’s appreciated.

“We’ll have to see Arsenal’s situation in December, it will depend on their position in their Champions League group and the Premier League table. It’s not guaranteed that they will spend big money on Toney, because it would have to be at least £65m, so Arsenal want to take their time to decide on what they need.”

Some Arsenal fans will surely want to see an upgrade come in up front, even if Nketiah is a decent squad player who can do damage to teams like Sheffield United from time to time.

Toney, however, would likely be able to take this team to the next level, giving more of a guarantee of 20-25 goals a season than either Nketiah or Gabriel Jesus can give.

It won’t be easy, however, so as Romano says, this is surely an open situation ahead of January.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on the Brentford striker Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old striker is currently suspended for breaching betting regulations but he is set to return to action midway through January. He is hoping to join a big club and the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham could provide him with that opportunity.

However, a report from Fichajes claims that his €70 million asking price could prove to be prohibitive to any transfer and the likes of Arsenal and Spurs are unwilling to pay that kind of money for him.

Although he is a proven performer in the Premier League, the London clubs are hoping to sign him for a more reasonable price. It will be interesting to see if Brentford are willing to reduce their asking price and sell him for a more reasonable fee.

There is no doubt that Toney would improve both clubs immensely. Arsenal have Gabriel Jesus at their disposal and the Brazilian has not been a prolific goalscorer for them. Toney would add a new dimension to their attack.

Similarly, Tottenham need to bring in an upgrade on Richarlison who has not been able to replace Harry Kane.

Both clubs have made an impressive start to the Premier League campaign and Toney will be attracted to the idea of playing for them. Their attacking approach would be a good fit for his game as well. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

There doesn’t seem to be a transfer window that goes by now without Chelsea being heavily involved in one way or another.

The Blues have been the busiest club in the marketplace by a distance since Todd Boehly took over, and there’s nothing to suggest that things won’t be much the same in January and next summer.

One player that could be of interest to them is their former striker, Tammy Abraham.

Currently out injured, the forward could be open to a move back to the Premier League according to TeamTalk, and Chelsea have an ace up their sleeve should they decide to bring the player back to Stamford Bridge.

The report also states that Aston Villa and Brentford could be interested – the former incase Ollie Watkins decides to move on – which appears unlikely given that he’s just signed a contract extension until 2028 – and the latter because Ivan Toney is expected to leave.

Where Chelsea are one step ahead is that their player, Romelu Lukaku, is currently ripping it up in Serie A, and there’s a possibility of a swap deal with the Belgian.

Though the truth behind Lukaku’s fall-out at the Blues hasn’t become public, it does appear that he has no future in west London, so a swap with Tammy Abraham could be a move to suit all parties.

Former Premier League footballer and now pundit Owen Hargreaves believes West Ham United manager David Moyes should make a move to sign Brentford’s Ivan Toney in January.

The England striker is expected to leave the Bees during the next transfer window upon his return to the sport on January 16th.

The Brentford star is currently serving a ban from playing for eight months after admitting to 232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules

Moyes has been linked with a big-money move to sign the £50 million-rated Ivan Toney this winter, reports Football London, but the Hammers face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Hargreaves has stated that West Ham should make a move for Toney to fill their goalscoring needs.

The pundit said: “Ivan Toney is the one who screams out. Benrahma can play off the left. Kudus can play off one of those wide areas. I think Moyes has got the players. Maybe get a Toney in, if you could. But I just think you have to get Kudus in the side, then allow Paqueta to play central. He is easily their best player.”

Fabrizio Romano has taken to his exclusive Daily Briefing column to discuss Chelsea’s January transfer plans in attack and defence.

According to the transfer news expert, Chelsea could be keen to sign either Victor Osimhen or Ivan Toney up front, with reinforcements in attack looking like a clear priority for the Blues after a difficult start to the season relying on unconvincing youngster Nicolas Jackson in that department.

Osimhen and Toney look ideal after their form for Napoli and Brentford, respectively, so it will be interesting to see how this develops in the weeks and months ahead.

Romano admits that one issue could be that it will be difficult to prise Osimhen away from Napoli in the middle of the season, so that could perhaps point towards Toney being the more realistic option.

Meanwhile, Romano added that Chelsea could also look for new signings at centre-back, depending on what opportunities come up in the market.

“With Chelsea, a new striker for sure will be discussed ahead of January, while a new centre-back can be a possibility in case they find an opportunity but they’re not desperate to get one, it depends on the market opportunities, so I can’t give names for the moment, but they have excellent directors so I’m sure they will find good options if that’s what they decide,” Romano said.

“For the striker position, we already know about links with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen, and for sure either of them would be top top signings. For Osimhen, however, I still think a January move away from Napoli is looking difficult.”

Although they have a reasonable enough 16 goals from their opening nine Premier League games, it’s fairly obvious that West Ham need to get a top level striker on board to ease the goalscoring burden on the fading twin strike force of Danny Ings and Michail Antonio.

At present, things look relatively healthy for the Hammers but over the course of a long, hard season, not bringing in another front man could come back to haunt them.

Though they bought well in other areas of the squad during the summer, David Moyes and Tim Steidten neglected the striking department so that has to be a priority in January.

Former Man United midfielder and now broadcaster, Owen Hargreaves, has suggested that perhaps the Hammers should go after Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who will be back from an eight month ban in January.

He’s unlikely to come cheap and it’d be interesting to see if West Ham would push the boat out financially to that extent, but Hargreaves is clear.

“Ivan Toney is the one who screams out,” he said on Premier League Productions (h/t HITC).

“Benrahma can play off the left. Kudus can play off one of those wide areas.

“I think Moyes has got the players. Maybe get a Toney in, if you could. But I just think you have to get Kudus in the side, then allow Paqueta to play central. He is easily their best player.”

With it believed that London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal might also be interested in Toney’s services, Moyes and Steidten will have a hell of a job convincing the player that the London Stadium should be the next port of call in his career.

Hello and welcome to today’s exclusive column for the Daily Briefing – click here to subscribe to unlock the complete version, and for more content from myself, Ben Jacobs, Jonathan Johnson and our other columnists.

Jadon Sancho – There is still no price for Sancho, it will be important to see if it’s a permanent transfer or a loan – they will be open to any opportunity, though of course they’d probably favour a permanent transfer. Still, they know that in January it won’t be easy to find someone willing to pay something in the region of, and this is just my opinion, £50-55m, is not going to be easy. There is no change at the moment, no apology from Sancho, so it looks 90% over between him and the club. It’s similar to the situation with Cristiano Ronaldo a year ago – it’s really complicated, and Erik ten Hag doesn’t want any difficulties like this inside the club – FULL STORY HERE

Takefusa Kubo – In terms of replacing Sancho, there have been reports about Takefusa Kubo and in my opinion he would be a fantastic option, Kubo is a top player. But I’m afraid there’s absolutely nothing concrete happening there from what I’m told. Kubo is a crucial player for Real Sociedad, also Real Madrid are still keeping an eye on him for the future. I’m not aware of any talk with other clubs at this stage, and I don’t think it’s one for January honestly – FULL STORY HERE

Kalvin Phillips – From speaking to sources, it’s very likely for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window. That’s the idea, that’s the feeling, because the player both in public and in private has been very clear that he wants to play as a starter – FULL STORY HERE

Kalvin Phillips in action for Manchester City

Ivan Toney – The feeling of sources is that Toney’s asking price could be around £60-65m – Brentford would ideally want more than this, but the feeling at the moment is that for that kind of price the deal could be done – FULL STORY HERE

Aaron Ramsdale – The Aaron Ramsdale situation could be one to keep open, but at the moment I’m not aware of any negotiations. The goalkeeper market is a bit different from outfield players – it’s not easy for a goalkeeper to find a top club who can guarantee playing time – FULL STORY HERE

Cole Palmer – Chelsea deserve immense credit for the signing of Cole Palmer, because he’s been fantastic. West Ham and Brighton also wanted Palmer this summer, but Chelsea were ready to pay a big amount of money to Man City to make it happen, and it made the difference. For me, Palmer was also absolutely ready to play at Manchester City’s level too, but City have so many top players and so it’s understandable that they decided to sell when the right offer came in – FULL STORY HERE

Victor Osimhen – Despite rumours, I can 100% guarantee that Victor Osimhen has not agreed anything with Liverpool or any club. He’s not negotiating any contract or salary with any other club, even if there is interest from around Europe, which is normal. Still, it’s also true that Osimhen has not agreed anything with Napoli, despite receiving a contract proposal which was the biggest in Napoli’s history – FULL STORY HERE

Assan Ouedraogo – There have been reports about Liverpool being keen on Schalke youngster Assan Ouedraogo, and yes it’s true that Liverpool like him – FULL STORY HERE

Ivan Toney wants to leave Brentford and remain in the Premier League.

That’s according to leading transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano, who has explained exactly what the near future could have in store for the Brentford striker.

Having enjoyed a fantastic rise and now known as one of the country’s most prolific forwards, Toney, 27, sparked speculation his time at the Community Stadium is coming to an end after he teamed up with leading agency CAA Stellar in August.

What is the latest Ivan Toney transfer news from Fabrizio Romano?

“There is a lot of interest since he joined CAA Stellar agency in the summer,” Romano said on Monday’s episode of the DeBrief podcast.

“The idea of the player is to move to an English top club. There was interest from many clubs already last year, especially from Italy, some important clubs wanted to consider the opportunity to go and sign Ivan Toney but now joining Stellar group it means the priority of the player is to stay in England and to stay in Premier League.”

And with several top sides on the lookout for a new centre forward, there are multiple links beginning to emerge. For example, all of the league’s top London-based clubs are believed to be interested in signing the 27-year-old and that is set to spark a bidding war.

“There is interest from Arsenal, for sure he is a player appreciated by people at the club so they consider Toney as an important striker but we have to see if Arsenal want to spend a big amount of money again after what they did in the summer on many players like Declan Rice and Kai Havertz,” Romano added.

“The same for Chelsea. We mention them for Victor Osimhen, but Ivan Toney is another striker they are following and monitoring because they will go for a striker in 2024 – let’s see if it’s going to be January or the summer.

“[…] We have to [also] see what Tottenham want to do. At the moment they are very happy with the squad but in case they go for a striker, Toney could be an opportunity.”

How much do Brentford want for Ivan Toney?

Going on to address the kind of transfer fee it is going to take to sign Toney, who is continuing to serve a betting-related ban, Romano feels a future deal for the Bees’ number 17 could see him become one of the Premier League’s top 10 most expensive forwards (TM).

“For Brentford, the price tag has to be something around £65 million,” the Italian transfer guru added.

“Not less than £65 million. They want more than this but the feeling of sources is that for £65 million a deal could be done.”

During his three years at Brentford, Toney, who has two years left on his deal, has scored 89 goals in 124 games in all competitions.
