Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe may have appeared to hint that he’ll be completing a transfer to Real Madrid when he becomes a free agent in summer 2024, but Fabrizio Romano insists we shouldn’t read too much into whatever the player did at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Mbappe winked when asked by reporters about ending up at Madrid as his next club, but Romano has provided an update on the France international’s situation in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing.

Real Madrid have long been linked as a future destination for Mbappe, but it seems nothing is going to be decided now, even if the 24-year-old is just months away from becoming a free agent.

We’ll have to wait a bit longer before learning what Mbappe decides to do next, as well as Real’s plans for the summer transfer window, according to Romano, who is one of the most trustworthy journalists when it comes to these matters and never one to sensationalise stories.

“Kylian Mbappe attracted some attention with his reaction to being asked about moving to Real Madrid next summer, but I’m afraid I still have nothing at all to report at this point,” Romano said.

“I don’t expect any big movement now in this moment of the year. Mbappe is focused on PSG and Real Madrid are happy with their current situation, then in 2024 it will become clear what he wants to do with PSG on the contract situation… and at that point, with Real Madrid too.

“We’ll have to wait and see, but there’s nothing happening now, despite stories.”

The future of Kylian Mbappe is still up in the air as Paris Saint-Germain are determined to not lose the superstar for free despite his contract expiring at the end of the season. 

The French international chose not to activate the one-year extension on his current deal over the summer meaning he can go where he pleases at the end of the season. This caused a lot of drama at the Ligue 1 champions before the season began as the club stopped Mbappe from going on their pre-season tour as a result of his decision.

Real Madrid have always been the favourites for the 24-year-old and is the most likely destination for Mbappe next summer, but a new report states that Premier League duo Liverpool and Chelsea are ready to make an audacious move for the forward in January.

According to the Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport via Le 10 Sport, Chelsea and Liverpool intend to try their luck for Mbappe during the winter transfer window and are ready to offer the superstar “extremely important contracts”.

Both clubs have been linked to the PSG star before and a transfer in January is very unlikely as the French club will not want to lose him mid-season.

It would have to be a huge offer for this to happen and that is hard to see right now. Mbappe will more than likely leave for free next summer or sign a short-term deal so PSG can get some money for him as the Frenchman is destined to wear the white of Real Madrid one way or another.

There’s always so much conjecture over who should win the Ballon d’Or; the tactical voting it’s believed that takes place, Lionel Messi winning too many, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves more etc.

Ultimately, it should be given to the player that has been the best in the world and that has done something to deserve the accolade.

Erling Haaland’s goal haul in the Premier League really was special. For a player making his debut in that league and carrying on where he left off in the Bundesliga – and then some – absolutely deserves praise.

However, was that not what he was brought in to do?

And in the biggest match of the season against Inter Milan, he was a bystander. Someone who didn’t affect play in any way shape or form.

Winning the treble clearly made him a contender for the Ballon d’Or, as did Kylian Mbappe’s World Cup hat-trick and goals record during the qualifying period, but Messi’s candidacy surpasses both.

Single-handedly driving forward his Argentina side to a long-overdue World Cup is sufficient enough, however, we can add to that his goals and assists for PSG and Inter Miami and the impact he’s made on the latter as more than enough reasons.

Kylian Mbappe seems unlikely to seal a big transfer away from Paris Saint-Germain this January, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Writing in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing, Jacobs made it clear that PSG were confident of keeping Mbappe, with the feeling being that he could still sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe is nearing the end of his PSG contract, which means January could be the last chance for the Ligue 1 giants to get a transfer fee for him.

Still, it seems PSG are relaxed about the situation, and Jacobs expects Mbappe’s future is more likely to be resolved after January than during it.

The France international had been keen to remain with PSG for one more season, so it may be that he’ll simply continue to wait until he’s a free agent before deciding his next move.

Kylian Mbappe in action for PSG

Either that, or it seems committing to a longer stay to PSG can’t be ruled out either.

“Kylian Mbappe has not renewed his contract but PSG are very calm about the situation and just focused on the season ahead,” Jacobs said.

“There is no guarantee anything will happen before January either and PSG are comfortable with that scenario. Barring an astronomical offer, there are no expectations Mbappe will leave in January even though as it stands it’s the last window PSG can get a fee for him. Obviously that can change if anything new is agreed.

“Mbappe has made it repeatedly clear he wants to see out the entire season with PSG. And providing the French champions get out of their Champions League group I don’t see him leaving for Real Madrid or elsewhere mid-season. Obviously if PSG fail to do so we will have to wait and see.

“PSG sources still hope Mbappe will renew in some capacity. This could be a renewal in order to stay or still with a view to still leaving next summer. The latter protects PSG because it would guarantee them a fee, but perhaps one Mbappe feels is at or even slightly below his market value. In other words at a number that’s tempting for someone to pay.

“The other option is Mbappe just leaves for free. This scenario could still see PSG protected, providing Mbappe was prepared to forgo something financially.

“Right now nothing is decided, but PSG are optimistic whatever happens they won’t necessarily lose money if Mbappe leaves, and that if their project goes to plan he could yet stay for longer. My own view is things could be resolved after January rather than during it.”

Fabrizio Romano insists there was never anything concrete in terms of Manchester United targeting Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe if Sheikh Jassim had been successful in purchasing the club.

Writing in today’s edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano discussed a range of issues involving the Man Utd ownership, including what went wrong with Sheikh Jassim’s efforts to purchase the club from the Glazer family.

Mbappe was linked as a target for the Red Devils if they ended up under Qatari ownership, but Romano insists the takeover was never even that close, so he doesn’t see there being much to this story.

The France international was also eager to stay at PSG this summer, so it seems unlikely that United ever had much of a chance to sign him this year anyway.

“I can also say that, despite links with Kylian Mbappe, it’s normal to have rumours like this when new owners could be coming in, but there was nothing concrete,” Romano said.

“For one thing, the takeover was never that close. Mbappe was also very clear in the summer that he wanted to stay at PSG for at least one more season. Still, I can say that Sheikh Jassim wanted to make a star signing in the summer, though I have no confirmation that Mbappe was on his list.”

Romano added that it’s now on Mbappe to respond to PSG’s approaches to sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes, with no update yet on whether or not he’ll do so.

He said: “Despite what’s been reported elsewhere, I have no news at all on Mbappe and an imminent contract offer from PSG.

“It seems pretty obvious that PSG have been offering him a new deal for a long time, they spent years insisting on extending the contract, so it’s on Mbappe now, not on PSG. And there’s no update yet on Mbappe’s side, we will see in the next weeks/months.”

Manchester United were reportedly set to target three big names in the transfer market if the takeover bid by Sheikh Jassim had been successful.

The Red Devils now look set to see British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe launch a bid for a 25% stake in the club, as reported by Sky Sports and others, but Qatari ownership would really have been a game-changer for the Premier League giants.

Mbappe plays a give and go with Adrien Rabiot to come in from the left wing, and once he receives the return pass he lets it fly, curling straight into the top corner.

This is his second goal of the game, giving France a 2-0 lead and extending their lead at the top of the group if they hold on and get the victory against Netherlands who are second in the group.

France have taken the lead in their EURO 2024 qualifying match with the Netherlands thanks to their main man Kylian Mbappe. 

A win for the French will confirm their place as Group B winners and Didier Deschamps’ side will want to get the job done tonight.

It has been a good start for the World Cup runners-up as Mbappe has scored after just seven minutes.

The PSG star volleyed home a beautiful cross and it will be tough for the Dutch to go on and win the match from here.
