With Ian Maatsen still apparently stalling on a contract extension at Chelsea, he could become a crucial pawn in the Blues pursuit of 19-year-old Boca Juniors ace, Valentin Barco.

The Argentinian left-back is much sought-after with 90Min crediting both Man City and Brighton and Hove Albion with an interest in the player.

Where Maatsen becomes part of the equation is if Chelsea can push for a deal for Barco, they would then allow Maatsen to join Man City.

Clearly, if Pep Guardiola’s side, who are the current favourites to land Barco according to 90Min, manage to get that deal over the line then Maatsen either stays at Stamford Bridge or moves anywhere other than City.

One can understand the Dutchman’s reticence in signing a new deal with the Blues too.

According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old has only played 90 minutes on one occasion this season, and that was in the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon.

In the Premier League, the most minutes he’s managed in one single game is 45, against Fulham, with the sum total of his other five English top-flight appearances coming to 39 minutes.

An £8m release clause for Barco, per 90Min, is well within the grasp of all three Premier League clubs and it remains to be seen which of them will be able to acquire his services and whether Maatsen’s involvement tips the balance.

Brighton and Hove Albion will be without Solly March for ‘a long time.

That’s according to manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has reiterated just how serious the winger’s recent injury is.

Sustaining a knee injury during a 2-1 defeat against Manchester City last weekend, Eastbourne-born wide-man March is now set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

Asked for an update on the 29-year-old’s condition ahead of the Seagulls’ Europa League group game against Ajax on Thursday night, De Zerbi said: “Solly has, unfortunately, a very, very tough injury; very important injury.

“We’ll lose him for a long time, for a long period, and for [Danny] Welbeck, the same.”

All 20 Premier League clubs are set to vote against the proposal of the formation of a new European Super League, according to an exclusive from Ben Jacobs via the Daily Briefing.

This story hasn’t completely gone away since a first attempt at forming a Super League fell apart in just 48 hours back in April 2021, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham backing the project at the time before U-turning after huge backlash from fans.

All 20 English top flight teams have now agreed that they’re against the idea of the European Super League, despite some figures in the game clearly still being keen on trying to make it work.

Jacobs claims the opposition from Premier League clubs is now unlikely to change, so it remains to be seen if it can really go ahead without big names like Arsenal and Man Utd involved.

Crucially, prospective United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also thought to be against the Super League.

What’s great about this season’s Premier League race is that no one team has pulled away from the chasing pack thus far.

Whilst it’s true that we’re only nine games into the season, it bodes well to have the top five teams at present all within four points of each other.

It shows that whomever is going to emerge victorious at the end of the season will be doing so by sheer hard graft.

Manchester City have already looked vulnerable this season under Pep Guardiola, though that might have always been expected given that they coming off the back of a treble winning season with desire and focus perhaps not quite where it should be.

Aston Villa are one of the surprise packages with Unai Emery seeing his side playing some sparkling stuff so far in 2023/24. Whether they have the squad to sustain a challenge for the remainder of the campaign is a moot point at this stage.

Tottenham are playing with a freedom not seen for years, whilst north London neighbours Arsenal have the bit between their teeth again, despite the disappointment of last season.

Steve McManaman, unsurprisingly, has picked out Liverpool as his title dark horses.

“I would say that Liverpool have probably played the hardest games so far out of the teams in the title race,” he said on BBC Radio Five Live, cited by Liverpool World.

“They’ve played away from home against Brighton, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham, so the fact that they’re sitting close despite competing in those difficult fixtures is an indication that they’ve potentially been the most impressive so far out of all the title contenders.

“I believe that all the teams around the top of the table currently are the sides that you’d expect to be there.”

Fellow pundit, Chris Sutton, agreed.

“I went early on them,” he noted.

“Just because of the midfield players they have brought and the rotation they can have in forward areas. You never leave Salah out, but the options they have in forward areas…I’m still worried about them defensively, but I was at the Etihad at the weekend, and Man City were brilliant in the first half, but they are looking…I don’t want to say vulnerable, but I think Liverpool will be a bigger challenger to Man City than Arsenal will, I really do this season.”

Although Barcelona appear to be heading in the right direction in terms of restructuring their finances and getting back on their feet, they’re still far from out of the woods at this point.

Former president, Josep Maria Bartomeu’s questionable decisions and alleged corruption almost brought the club to its knees, but since his removal and the election of Joan Laporta, things are slowly but surely getting better.

Perhaps the best evidence of that is the long overdue rebuilding of the Camp Nou, and the fact that the club are able to start buying some of the best players that European football has to offer.

Things could be so much better of course but it is going to take a long, long time before the blaugranes can be considered as the best on the continent and in the world again.

Ansu Fati

One player that arguably has never reached the heights that his early professional career promised is Ansu Fati.

His star has waned so much, that he’s now plying his trade at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Frankly, that’s not a bad option at this stage of his career, given how poor his recent form at Barca had been, and the club will be hoping he can rediscover some of the old magic.

That’s because, according to Sport (h/t Football Espana) the Catalan giants want to cash in and sell him at the end of the season to bring in some much needed funds.

Chelsea beat both West Ham United and Brighton to the transfer of Cole Palmer from Manchester City this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano in the latest edition of his exclusive Daily Briefing column.

Palmer has shone since his move from Man City, and it looks like the Blues did well to see off competition for the young Englishman’s signature, with Romano also stating his belief that the 21-year-old could have been good enough to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Still, there was so much competition for a place in the City squad, it’s not too surprising that Palmer ended up leaving, and Chelsea are now reaping the benefits.

Mauricio Pochettino has an exciting young squad at his disposal, so Palmer also looks like he made a good career move, as he’ll surely continue to get the chance to play regularly and develop his game at Stamford Bridge.

Discussing the Palmer deal, Romano said: “I can now mention something behind the scenes from the summer, when many wingers were being linked with Chelsea. Their priority target was Cole Palmer, but also in their list was Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao. Chelsea scouted him for a long time before deciding to go for Palmer as their priority.”

Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea

He added: “Anyway, I also think it’s important to give credit to Chelsea for the signing of Cole Palmer, because he’s been fantastic. West Ham and Brighton also wanted Palmer this summer, but Chelsea were ready to pay a big amount of money to Man City to make it happen, and it made the difference.

“For me, Palmer was also absolutely ready to play at Manchester City’s level too, but City have so many top players and so it’s understandable that they decided to sell when the right offer came in.”

The future of Ansu Fati at Barcelona is very uncertain and Saudi Arabia has now joined the race for the 20-year-old ahead of the summer of 2024.

That is according to SPORT, who reports that Saudi Arabia fully intends to sign Fati during next summer’s transfer window and that some of the player’s entourage are keen on the move.

The winger is currently on loan at Brighton and Barca hope that Roberto De Zerbi can help the Spain international discover the form he showed when breaking onto the scene at the Camp Nou following his debut in 2019.

Saudi clubs have been splashing the cash since the summer and luring another young star to their league will only help it grow.

Fati’s future at Barcelona looks certain to end with the winger leaving as Xavi has plenty of stars in his position and the emergence of Yamine Lamal has only made his chances of succeeding at the Catalan club slimmer.

The 20-year-old has yet to break into the Brighton side either and all this leaves him with an uncertain future in Europe as he has not shown enough and has a bleak injury record.

The rest of this season could be huge for the youngster’s career and if he fails to produce, a move to Saudi Arabia could be on the cards.

Ansu Fati has just pulled one back for Brighton against Manchester City making the remaining 15 minutes very an interesting watch.

Manchester City scored twice in the first half with goals from Alvarez and Haaland giving City a comfortable lead.

But Brighton have given themselves a lifeline. Mitoma twists and turns as he dribbles his way into the City penalty box, evading a challenge from Kyle Walker before putting a cross in. His cross is intercepted by Akanji but the defender fails to clear it as the ball falls to the Barcelona loanee who finishes it first time past the City keeper.
