David Moyes has urged West Ham fans to welcome Declan Rice back with ‘open arms’ on Wednesday evening.

Arsenal faces West Ham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup tomorrow night at the London Stadium.

With both sides playing in European competitions and with crucial games at the weekend, it is expected that they will heavily rotate their squads.

The Gunners made ten changes in the last round against Brentford and are expected to make a similar number again this time around.

However, Mikel Arteta hinted that Rice will likely feature against his old club on Wednesday stating that it will be a ‘beautiful moment’ for the former Hammers captain.

Speaking ahead of the game, Moyes urged the West Ham fans to welcome him back.

“I hope we’ll see Declan back,” Moyes said via the Standard.

“This is the man who lifted the first European trophy in 50 years at West Ham. He should be welcomed back with open arms.

“He was a brilliant member of the team and conducted himself impeccably as a West Ham captain. I’m really looking forward to seeing him. I’m not sure I want him to play! But I hope he is there.”

It’s very clear indeed where West Ham’s problems lie this season, even if they began the 2023/24 campaign in reasonable enough fashion.

With 10 games gone in the campaign so far, they’re one of only two teams in the top 11 sides in the Premier League with a negative goal difference.

Why? It’s because they don’t score enough goals.

With 33-year-old striker, Michail Antonio, not getting any younger and Danny Ings being a complete waste of space so far this season, the Hammers front line boast an embarrassing two goals between them, both scored by Antonio, per WhoScored.

It beggars belief why the club didn’t prioritise one in the summer window but there’s no use worrying about that now.

According to Calciomercato, West Ham are one of a clutch of teams that are ‘vigilant and determined to obtain new information’ on Roma’s England striker, Tammy Abraham.

Though injured at present, he would surely represent an affordable incoming transfer in Janaury and is unlikely to do any worse than his contemporaries, Ings and Antonio.

The Irons need to be right on it in terms of a striker hunt so that as soon as the window opens, they can hit their ground running with their new purchase.

According to reports, Simon Hooper has been appointed as the referee for the fourth-round clash between the two London clubs.

Hooper was previously on VAR duty for the draw away to Southampton last season and West Ham were unhappy with his officiating.

A report from Calciomercato.It claims that Premier League clubs Aston Villa, West Ham United and Fulham are all keen on signing the 26-year-old striker.

The opportunity to return to the Premier League could be an attractive proposition for the former Chelsea striker and it remains to be seen whether the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham can agree on a fee with Roma.

The Italian outfit have signed Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on loan and the Belgian has been in fine form. They could look to sign him permanently at the end of the season and Abraham would then need to leave the club in order to play regularly.

Aston Villa have been overly dependent on Ollie Watkins for goals and they could certainly use another striker. Abraham has previously played for Aston Villa on loan and he knows the club well. The opportunity to return to the West Midlands club could be tempting for him and he could share the goal-scoring burden alongside Watkins.

Similarly, West Ham need to add more quality and depth in the final third. They will have to bring in a quality long-term replacement for Michail Antonio. Abraham would be a quality acquisition for both clubs and they have the financial resources to get the deal done as well.

It remains to be seen where the 26-year-old ends up eventually.  He needs to join a club where he will get ample first-team action and the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham should be able to provide him with that opportunity.

After some spectacular work in the summer transfer window, the Irons should really be in a much better position than their current ninth place.

One question that needs to be asked is why isn’t Moyes using the insanely talented Divin Mubama in games that are getting away from the Hammers?

Though he clearly lacks top-flight experience, he surely can’t do any worse than Antonio and Ings have managed of late.

Ings hasn’t yet managed to score in 11 appearances in all competitions, per WhoScored, whilst Antonio only has two in 12 (WhoScored).

Mubama’s lack of action could now end up causing Moyes even more problems as The Athletic (subscription required) note that he has refused the offer of a contract extension.

Given that he’s in the final year of his current deal, he could walk away from the club if nothing changes in the next few weeks.

‘Although there have been rumours that West Ham are willing to pay £35m for Manuel Locatelli, I’ve reported that he’s close to reaching an agreement over a new deal at Juventus,’ the CaughtOffside columnist wrote in his exclusive Daily Briefing.
