West Ham United have reportedly opened talks in the last 24 hours to try to clinch the potential transfer of Coventry City striker Victor Gyokeres.

The Sweden international has impressed in the Championship, scoring 23 goals in all competitions last season, despite previously struggling at Brighton earlier in his career.

It now seems like Gyokeres could be a hit in the Premier League, and West Ham seem to be stepping up their interest in the 25-year-old, with key developments taking place in the last 24 hours.

This is according to Portuguese newspaper Record, who also claim Sporting Lisbon are among the player’s suitors at the moment.

Saturday afternoon brought the awful news that a former Wolves and Coventry City player who had played in the Premier League had succumbed to a heart attack and passed away at the age of just 45.

Cedric Roussel may not be a household name to many, but he played alongside Robbie Keane, Gary McAllister and Moustapha Hadji at Coventry and also represented his country, Belgium, on a handful of occasions.

Known as ‘the entertainers,’ the team played some sparking football under manager Gordon Strachan, but they were unable to prevent relegation to the second tier in 2001.

According to transfermarkt, that was the last time they played in the English top-flight.

The news was broken on the official Coventry City website, who detailed that the player scored on 11 occasions for the Midlands-based club during his 43 games played for the Sky Blues during 1999-2001.

His injuries forced a move to near neighbours, Wolverhampton Wanderers, before the player moved back to his homeland and enjoyed spells at Mons and Genk.

Thereafter, he would turn out for clubs in Italy, Cyprus, Belgium and Russia, during a nine-year spell in which he played for 10 different clubs.

To pass away at such a young age is very sad indeed, and the whole football world will be in mourning with his former clubs at this time.

The Mauricio Pochettino era at Chelsea is about to begin in earnest and for Blues fans it promises to be another exciting time.

If Todd Boehly can allow his ego to take a back seat in terms of transfer dealings, and Pochettino is allowed to go about his work without too much interference from the American and his board, there’s every reason to believe that the west Londoners may have a decent season ahead in 2023/24.

There will need to be some players that move on and won’t be able to share in the new dawn breaking over Stamford Bridge, with one in particular possibly dropping down a division to Championship high-flyers Coventry City.

Coventry vs Luton

The Sky Blues were ousted in the Championship Play-Off final by Luton Town via a high drama penalty shoot out under Mark Robins.

Though not going up is likely to have hit the Midlands-based side hard, Robins is a studious coach and Coventry have to be one of the favourites to go up next season.

Alongside Robins is Adi Viveash, former coach of Chelsea’s academy, and the Evening Standard report that it’s that link which could see highly-rated 20-year-old defender, Bashir Humphreys, move from the west Londoners.

He does still have one year left on his contract with the Blues, however, with an option to extend this by a further 12 months, so any deal is a long way off yet, but can’t be discounted entirely.

Leeds United are planning an ambitious move to sign Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

That’s according to a report from Football League World which claims that Leeds want to make Hamer their marquee signing.

The report also claims that they are eying the midfielder as a replacement for Marc Roca who is expected to return to Real Betis.

However, with Leeds now relegated, the club hierarchy are not fully convinced that they will be able to tempt Hamer into joining them.

The midfielder had an incredible season and was one of the key players in Coventry’s superb campaign that saw them reach the playoffs only to lose to Luton.

The 25-year-old scored 9 goals and assisted 10 in 41 games for Coventry this season and has attracted the attention of many clubs including Brighton.

With him entering the last year of his contract, he could be available for a reduced price and it is only a matter of time before more clubs register their interest in him.

With the summer transfer window set to open in just a few days time, there’s likely to be a lot of positioning going on, be that from players themselves, agents or clubs, and Crystal Palace won’t be immune from that either.

The south Londoners were excellent under Roy Hodgson after the 75-year-old was brought back in to steady the ship after a horrendous run of results with Patrick Vieira at the helm.

With the likes of talented players such as Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and more in their ranks, there’s no reason why the Eagles can’t fly high in 2023/24, but the club will still need to be active in the market and improve upon what they already have in situ.

It isn’t clear at this point how much owner, Steve Parish, is willing to set aside for transfers, though £17m is unlikely to dent the coffers.

That’s the fee that Sky Sports believe Coventry are asking for Viktor Gyokeres, a player that, according to transfermarkt, can play in six attacking positions.

Given that sort of versatility, it’s no wonder that the broadcaster also notes the interest of Sporting, Wolves, Fulham and West Ham.

At just 25 years of age, his value both in financial and playing terms is obvious.

Clearly, if the south Londoners want to see him walking out in their red and blue shirts at Selhurst Park next season, they’re going to have to get in quick and make their pitch.

Newcastle United reportedly have an interest in the transfer of Coventry City forward Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sweden international could be moving to Newcastle Utd this summer after impressing in the Championship, with Dan Ashworth a big fan of the player.

Ashworth knows Gyokeres from his time at Brighton, where he sold the forward for just £1million.

The 24-year-old now looks greatly improved and like someone who could make an impact at St James’ Park.

Luton Town share update on 28-year-old star who collapsed during play-off final

Luton Town recently secured their promotion to the Premier League after the Championship play-off final victory over Coventry City on Saturday.

However, the occasion was marred by the injury to captain Tom Lockyer. The 28-year-old defender collapsed on the pitch early on in the game and he had to be stretched off and treated by the medical staff.

Lockyer has been a key player for Luton Town this season and his contributions of been vital to their promotion. Since joining the club in 2020, he has been a key player for Rob Edwards and the Welsh international has made 46 appearances across all competitions this season.

The newly promoted club have now released a statement confirming that Lockyer has been taken to hospital for further tests and he is responsive and talking to his family.

The club confirmed (h/t Athletic): “We are able to report that after collapsing on the pitch, Tom Lockyer has been taken to hospital for further tests.

“He is responsive and talking to his family, who are with him. We are all with you, Locks.”
