Things have been going well for David Moyes and his West Ham side this season, and the Scot can be pleased with the business that the club did over the summer in order for him to continue with the good form that the team were showing towards the back end of 2022/23.

Not being backed in the transfer market could’ve seen the Hammers regress as they’ve done so many times in the past, so a handful of studious and well thought out buys has them in amongst the chasing pack at present and looking lively.

Of course, not every player from last season will have made the squad for the current campaign, including those unlikely to be utilised or needing to be sold or loaned in order to balance out the squad and the books.

Declan Rice had seemingly made a decision to leave in the wake of West Ham’s epic Europa Conference League title win over Fiorentina, with Flynn Downes, who might have been expected to be given a chance in the position, shipped out on loan to Southampton.

It’s a move that has, so far, worked perfectly for the Saints and the player himself. Ultimately, it could also be to the east Londoners’ benefit.

“In transition (against Stoke), we were really good. Flynn was monstrous today and it has been the Flynn we know in the last two games. He’s been outstanding,” Southampton manager, Russell Martin, was quoted as saying by the Daily ECHO.

If his good form continues, he’ll be giving Moyes the headache of the best kind, unless the Premier League outfit have already made up their mind that Downes is surplus to requirements.

Leeds United were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Southampton on Saturday and Don Goodman was absolutely furious with one star after what he did against the Saints at St Mary’s.

Overall, it was a really bad performance from Leeds as Daniel Farke’s team were well-beaten thanks to goals from Adam Armstrong, Will Smallbone and a Pascal Struijk own-goal, before the Dutch defender pulled one back that ultimately meant nothing.

One player who had a bad day at the office was Crysencio Summerville and Goodman was not happy with the 21-year-old while doing commentary for Sky Sports.

Summerville failed to track Kyle Walker-Peters at one point in the game with his team struggling which infuriated Goodman.

“If anything had come from that, Crysencio Summerville would have been feeling the wrath of Daniel Farke I’m sure,” he said.

“He let Kyle Walker-Peters go way too easily, way too easily. Has to be more urgency than this, look where Kyle Walker-Peters picks this up, and look how easily Summerville just lets him go. ‘I’m not going to chase you, yeah I think I’ll start jogging now’.

“If anything comes from that in my day you’re getting pinned up against the dressing room wall. I know we don’t do that anymore but, needs to do better. Needs to have more desire, needs to have more hunger.”

In the Championship early kick-off between Leeds and Southampton, the all whites will be looking to continue their six-game unbeaten streak in the Championship, whilst the Saints look to get their first win since August 26th.

The hosts are fifth in the Championship with the visitors flying high in sixth ahead of the St. Mary’s Stadium clash. Southampton are yet to record a victory in the month of September, losing four in a row since.

Meanwhile, Leeds are starting to catch their stride. Convincing 3-0 wins over both Watford and Millwall have come as part of a run that has seen them not lose a game in the Championship since August 12th, when Birmingham beat them 1-0 at St. Andrews.

This will be the first time the sides face off since they played each other in the Premier League last season.

Overall the two have played each other 98 times, with Leeds winning on 48 occasions, Southampton winning 28 and the game ending a draw in the other 22 matches.

Ahead of the game, set to kickoff at 12:30 PM (BST), both Russell Martin and Daniel Farke have named their starting lineups.

Southampton have made four changes from last weekend’s game against Middlesbrough.

Ryan Manning comes in for Mason Holgate in defence, Carlos Alcaraz replaces Shea Charles in midfield, Kamaldeen Sulemana replaces Ryan Fraser on the left wing and Stuart Armstrong comes into the attack for Che Adams.

Leeds have named an unchanged XI from their 3-0 victory over Watford last weekend, whilst Patrick Bamford returns to the bench along with Joe Rodon who missed out last week through suspension.

It has been a positive start to the season for Crystal Palace with Roy Hodgson’s team sitting in ninth position in the Premier League and that comes after failing to sign a new striker ahead of the new campaign.

The Eagles failed to bring one in over the summer despite losing their biggest attacking threat in the form of Wilfried Zaha but Odsonne Édouard has stepped up for the London club scoring four goals across Palace’s opening five matches.

According to the Evening Standard, a star Crystal Palace were interested in signing over the summer was Southampton’s Che Adams, who signed for the Saints for just £15m in 2019.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones has suggested that internally, Palace have no regrets about not bringing Adams to Selhurst Park and that the London club are comfortable with what they have.

Jones said: “Speaking to people around Palace they’re okay with the situation in terms of not getting Che Adams .

“Obviously he was someone they did have interest in but they feel like they’re actually reasonably well set for the season. They’re quite comfortable in their performances.

“You know, they’re obviously not setting the world on fire but there’s every confidence that they can finish close to mid-table which is fine by the standards they have set for them. So I do wonder if Crystal Palace will still go back into the market in January for a forward player. But at the moment they’re saying no regrets over over Che Adams.”

Former Chelsea star Eden Hazard has not been short of transfer offers despite remaining a free agent for the time being, according to Ben Jacobs in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

Earlier today, Fabrizio Romano also reported on Hazard’s situation, stating that retirement is a concrete possibility for the Belgian forward, though a final decision has not yet been made.

Hazard has not had the option of returning to Chelsea, according to Jacobs, who also explained that the 32-year-old had a role to play in convincing fellow countryman Romeo Lavia to join the Blues this summer.

Lavia looks an exciting signing for Chelsea, though fans will have to wait for his debut due to an injury, so CFC supporters will surely be grateful to Hazard for helping them land this in-demand young talent.

Eden Hazard helped bring Romeo Lavia to Chelsea

Hazard’s future, however, still remains unclear, despite some interest from Lille, Nice, Al Hilal and clubs in the MLS, according to Jacobs.

“Eden Hazard is still a free agent and hasn’t yet decided if he wants to move to a new club. This is because retirement is also a possibility for the former Real Madrid and Chelsea attacking midfielder,” Jacobs said.

“A return to Chelsea was never an option for the 32-year-old. That rumour was fueled by Hazard being seen at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea’s season opener against Liverpool. Hazard played a role in attracting fellow Belgian Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, but a Chelsea return was never discussed.

Romeo Lavia during his time at Southampton

“Hazard hasn’t actually been short of offers. Al-Hilal made an enquiry earlier this summer. Hazard also had some MLS options, including interest from Inter Miami. A return to Lille was also discussed by the Ligue 1 club. And Nice considered Hazard as well.

“But the truth is Hazard hasn’t really spent the summer deliberating between clubs because before he can do that he has to decide if he wants to keep playing.”

Things have been going brilliantly for Eddie Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) since the latter took over at Newcastle and appointed the former.

Full houses at St. James’ Park are almost guaranteed these days, with the Magpies playing the type of football that Kevin Keegan’s swashbucklers did back in the 1990s.

The players have barely put a foot wrong recently, and they were a whisker away from capturing the club’s first major silverware since 1955 last season, beaten in the final of the Carabao Cup by Man United.

Qualification to the Champions League for the first time in two decades will have gone some way to making up for that, and everyone connected with the club will surely be looking forward to what else is to come this season.

That won’t include Ryan Fraser who had been frozen out by Howe for the last few months and who has now moved to Championship side, Southampton.

“It feels really good. The minute Russ (Martin) phoned me, it was something I really wanted to happen. I just can’t wait to get started now and help the team out in any way I can,” he was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.

“The club doesn’t deserve to be down here. We need to get back up as soon as possible this season, and all the lads will be doing everything we can to get us there. I’m just so happy to be here.”

It’s a move that makes perfect sense for all parties.

Fraser wasn’t even handed a squad number by Howe for the 2023/24 season, indicating without a word being said what the club’s intentions were.

The move means that the player can get his career back on track, and with the added motivation of helping the Saints try and get back into the Premier League at the first attempt.

This time next week most teams across Europe will have executed their transfer deals and know who’s in and who’s out, including Newcastle.

Eddie Howe has ensured that the Magpies have had another good window, with no reckless spending and the hire of players to specifically fit into the particular system that the manager wants to use.

It would be easier for Howe to chuck money around like confetti but that’s been shown not to work elsewhere and, arguably, only causes more problems.

Newcastle fans should be delighted that they have a manager who knows exactly what he wants on the pitch and who he believes are the right players to bring the club the success everyone desires.

As important is the financial backing from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), who have backed their man to the hilt.

Unfortunately for those who are surplus to requirements, the next week is likely to see them depart St. James’ Park, with Ryan Fraser having one foot out of the door already.

“There may be something with Ryan happen regarding Southampton. Apart from that, that’s all I know at the minute,” Howe was quoted as saying by the Shields Gazette.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone given that Fraser has barely been involved with the first team since a falling out with the manager last year over his attitude.

A move away therefore makes sense for all parties.
